Halo E3 teaser wasn’t actually Halo 5, Microsoft discussing Halo 2 Anniversary, says Spencer

Halo 5 got a teaser trailer at E3 a few weeks ago, right? Well, that’s all got a bit cloudy now thanks to some fresh quotes from Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, who claims it wasn’t Halo 5, but a 60FPS shooter coming in 2014. He’s also said that the publisher and 343 Industries are discussing the possibility of Halo 2: Anniversary.

If you missed the Halo E3 reveal trailer you can watch it again here.

Speaking with IGN, the Microsoft Game Studios vice president said of the trailer, “There was no ambiguity in not putting a number after the game. For me, what we showed wasn’t the game. Nobody should be confused on that.

“I didn’t really want to try to show something that was clearly a thought piece by the studio around where Master Chief is in his journey, and then drop the name after it and be somewhat disingenuous about that being the game.

“But I did want Bonnie to come out and say, ‘First-person shooter. Master Chief. Because they’ll get the questions – ‘Hey, is this ODST? What are you guys doing?’ Bonnie comes out and reaffirms that 343 is building this game. It’s Master Chief. It’s a first-person shooter at 60 frames per second. It’s coming in 2014.”

So something Halo related is coming in 2014, but it’s not Halo 5. Is Spencer simply alluding to the fact 343 is dropping numbered Halo games in favour of colons and subtitles?

Meanwhile, Halo 2: Anniversary may be gaining traction, as Spencer said Microsoft is discussing it, “I’ll be open. We have discussions about it. It’s more about the right time and making sure that we really would do the right thing for the franchise.”

“The Halo Anniversary that we did was as much about the launch of the first Xbox as well. It was a culmination of many things coming together. It would probably run out of steam if we were trying to think about, ‘Okay, what’s 10 years old now?’ It’s definitely more from the game itself, the experience that we’re able to bring to market. Less about ‘Is the last digit a zero?’ in terms of its anniversary.”

As much as I’d want to see Halo 5, I would enjoy a Halo 2 HD version. Given the treatment they gave Halo 1, that remake was actually pretty competent!

It’s only right to do another Halo anniversary game if its online is not ‘linked’ to a different Halo game. Halo: CE Anniversary should of had its own online and not be apart of Halo: Reach. Kinda ruins the point of an anniversary title when you are mixing two different games.

Hey Microsoft if your rehashing old games for quick and easy cash. Please port these to PC. Halo 2(Vista only) on PC is still barely playable and buggy as hell. Also it was ruined before it got out the door with GFWL attached :(

    Please, no more anniversary games.

Halo, alright, it was genre defining. Halo 2 kinda sucked.

Yup, 4Chan has always been a source of rumours that come true.

    Not a source of bullshit.

@6,8: Does seem quite legit, what with the Steam directory leaks including Halo 3, and almost all of those (barring Halo) have come true.

They way they redid anniversary was awesome. Graphics were incredible. Wish they redid the first God of War like that instead of just hi Rez ing it. Now that’s lazy.

    “It’s Master Chief. It’s a first-person shooter at 60 frames per second. It’s coming in 2014.”

Then it’s fucking Halo 5, doesn’t matter whether or not you want to add some stupid subtitle instead of a number in front of it.

Halo-2 still looks pretty good on my PC even now. Wouldn’t mind remake of course, but it has to be “next gen” this time for me to buy it.
