Saturday, 18th May 2013 21:16 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Mail.ru has announced that its Allods Online team is working with Obsidian Entertainment on a new MMO called Skyforge. The news was announced yesterday during the Russian Game Developer’s Conference. Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart called the project “interesting and promising,” and feels the partnership will be “a great experience for all of us.” Announced in May 2012, the MMO is slated for release on PC in 2014. A video is below. Thanks, GI International.

I really don’t feel good about this — this just seems like Obsidian whoring themselves out. I have nothing against them doing new projects, really, to the contrary, I endorse it. I remember when people were bitching about how they should be devoting time to exclusively developing their Kickstarter game and I pointed out how patently ridiculous and childish such an expectation is.

I believe that Obsidian are capable of making good games, even when they have a number of them in the oven. I would have welcomed another project of their own, but here it seems like they’re just helping to translate an MMO. And… there’s no real story or dialogue in an MMO, is there? Sure, having Obsidian’s writing there is going to help raise it above the norm, but what did having decent writers do for, say, The Old Republic? Nothing.

So I’m wary about this. I think Urquhart has made a massive misstep, here.

It also doesn’t help that it’s called Skyforge. You know, that thing from Skyrim. And it definitely doesn’t help that the typography of the title looks VERY similar to Skyrim. That’s… worrying.

This doesn’t sit well with me. It makes me worry for them.

For the record, Allods Online is a very gorgeous game. Gameplay is generic but beautiful still!

@3 They are actually growing, them being able to partner up with others is a good sign.

@1 I’m not worried, because I think most of the work is going to be the other party’s responsibility. Their main focus will be on Project Eternity and that other project which I secretly hope it’s KOTOR3.
