Wolfenstein: The New Order does not have multiplayer

Thursday, 9th May 2013 01:05 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Bethesda’s championship of single-player games continues with Wolfenstein: The New Order, which machine Games has decided shall not have a multiplayer component.

Speaking to Gamespot, creative director Jens Matthies said working on the franchise is an honour. Perhaps tampering with the formula would be sacrilegious?

“It’s such a huge part of video game legacy. If there’s a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It’s the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming. On a personal level, I played this when I was younger and it was mind-blowing. I never then of course dreamed that I was going to be working with it. It’s both an honor and a legacy,” he said.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is expected in the fourth quarter of this year, and is apparently coming to current and next-gen consoles as well as PC. if you’re not caught up on the game’s reveal, the Gamespot video below features discussion, developer interviews, and more.

They didn’t have the money to invest in muliplayer. Its all tied up in their Elder Scrolls MMO.

They have money to invest into whatever they want. This is another studio and wanted another title to come out before next gen plan and simple.

I’m disappointed because i’m almost solely a multiplayer kind of gamer; but i’m happy that they don’t feel obligated to have a token multiplayer feature. Its a shame how the multiplayer shooter market has be stagnating the last several years.

@7, I meant they don’t want to invest undue money in a throw away title and thats what this feels like .

Wonder how much it costs to test the water nowadays?

If shooters from the people who made shooters like the Riddick games are throwaway games, please throw more my way.

This is excellent news. Seriously, instead of a tacked on and half backed multiplayer, all resources can focus on one area as they should. Perhaps Bethesda has learned a few things other publishers and their games (BioShock 2 or Dead Space 2-3).

I really don’t understand you people. I said that on Kotaku, why in a Wolfensteing game, the MP to be tacked on? Haven’t you played RtCW MP or Enemy Territory?

Those have some of most solid MP even nowadays. Granted the MP was handeled by a different company in RtCW and then Splash Damage created the masterpiece that is Enemy Territory. These games along with BF1942, mastered the class based MP in the opposite direction, one with its wast battles the other with its close-quarters combat. ET even now 10 after release still have a small dedicated community.

Yes, Wolf 2009 was a let down in that department, but they could have created awesome MP if they just brought Enemy Territory in HD form.

    “does not have multiplayer”

    Always good to hear.

I think its a very good thing that publishers and developers have finally gotten out of that particular bad habit of shoveling in an unwanted MP component to games that don’t need it. Focus has always been the key to better games.

Yeah, MP simply doesnt work in FPS games. Right?

@14 I’m with you there. I would say Wolfenstein’s best contribution to gaming was RtCW’s mp. Those expecting a great single player experience from this series, prepare for disappointment.
