God of War: Ascension had a budget somewhere near $50 million – report

Monday, 22nd April 2013 05:52 GMT By Brenna Hillier

God of War: Ascension may have cost as much to make as Modern Warfare 2, a modern touchstone of big budget development – or even more.

Speaking to 20 Minuten, via Google Translate, lead producer Whitney Wade has said that Kratos’s latest adventure had “a mid double-digit million amount”.

A nice round ballpark figure, then, would be $50 million.

That’s a pretty big number but not that unbelievable; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is believed to have cost between $40 and $50 million, with later entries probably even more expensive.

That’s without the marketing budget, which can sometimes cost as much as development – or even more in the case of Modern Warfare 2′s $200 million.

The PlayStation 3 exclusive came in fourth on the NPD’s March charts and is believed to have under-performed. It did better in the UK, it seems.

Thanks, woe.

The poor sale could make Santa Monica think about another title.

I think it definitely shows in the presentation, as the graphics are amazing, but all that money really went towards giving people the God of War title no one asked for. No one asked for multiplayer. No one asked for a prequel. No one asked for a kinder, gentler Kratos. No one asked for the return of the Greek pantheon.

I know they probably wanted to save a true God of War 4 for the PS4, but still, this didn’t do much to excite the fanbase.

Isn’t this figure quite typical for most AAA games nowadays? I don’t think Sony should have spent so much on a spin off title but it’s definitely not an uncommon budget.

Guess what? Shoehorning an unnecessary and unwanted multiplayer mode into a story-driven, SINGLEPLAUER game costs money… And the multiplayer loving fans of COD or BF won’t be added to the GOW consumer base because of that MP mode.

MP Money for SP games = Wasted Money.

You can’t just continue franchise that has ended. You need to come up with something new.

@5: I didn’t ask for a kinder Kratos, because he’s already FUBAR. Nothing he experiences will add more depth to this essentially shallow character he has become. There were some sparks in God of War one, but 2 and 3 fucked it up.

No, Kratos needs to die. Give me a good Viking, who doesn’t act like a spoiled child and will fuck him up and call it a new Franchise. And by good I mean as good as Viking could be.

@9 – Well, okay, but that’d be a new franchise. God of War should always star Kratos.

^Now that would have been a true system seller, considering its a prequel like the PSP adventures.
