Android approaching 1 billion activations

Thursday, 18th April 2013 02:15 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Google’s Android smartphone OS ias close to 1 billion activations, CEO Eric Schmidt said at the AllThingsD Dive Into Mobile conference.

As reported by GamesIndustry, Schimdt said Android is on track to hit the milestone “in six to nine months”.

That’s impressive growth, since the platform was at 1.3 billion in September 2012.

1.5 million devices are activated daily and of these, more than 750 million are currently in use. Current usage stats for iOS are tricky to find, but Apple has sold over 400 million iDevices, so even if they were all still active it’s still a long way behind the multi-hardware OS.

Schmidt expects Android to cross 2 billion activations in just a year or two thanks to new, low-end, cheap devices, especially in Asia.

Its no god damn surprise its hitting a one billion. There are about five iterations of one Android phone line which is then refreshed what feels like every month.

I just want a phone that lasts a full week on a single charge.

@2, Then don’t bother with any smartphone. For a smartphone to last that long you’d have to rarely use it & if you rarely use it you shouldn’t bother with it.

@1, Having multiple variants of the same phone wouldn’t really affect overall sales too much. What does however is the variation, if you want an iPhone quality phone there will always be dozens of challenges with their own benefits but not every one can afford the $500 for that phone which is where Android really shines, doesn’t matter your budget you’ll always find an Android.

Wait…if it was at 1.3 billion in september last year, how can it be “approaching 1 billion” now if it’s been growing?

@4, misprint, it was 1.3 million activations per day in September last year and 500 million devices.

Today it’s 1.5 million activations, 750 million devices and they expect it to cross a billion within the year.
