Dead Space live action fan trailer is actually brilliant

Dead Space fans have put together a trailer for Visceral’s series called “Chase to Death”. It shows Isaac Clarke snooping around a creepy spaceship being hounded by Necromorph buggers.

The clip was created by director Eric Zaragoza and producer Matt Laumann. Show them some mad-love over on YouTube if you like the clip.

Thanks AGB.

Oh yeah, this is actually really well done. Even if the protagonist looks like a chubby kid running.

Should’ve used the suit from the second Dead Space.

I’m not sure if I agree with that. I’ve spent a lot of time with the Dead Space games, and whilst I think the second suit is a bit nifty, it does lose a lot of the personality of Dead Space.

See, Dead Space 2′s suit looks like a fairly typical mecha from a Japanese manga/anime, and that’s clearly where they drew their inspiration. In fact, there are some mangas which have mechs with damn near identical heads.

The original, though? It was its own thing. It wasn’t stereotypical at all, it wasn’t typically Western or Asian. It was what it was. And over time I’ve come to appreciate that. Whilst I do like Dead Space 2′s take, I don’t think anything can really knock the original when it comes to having its own personality.

And when it comes to artistic style over fidelity, personality is important. This is probably why Dead Space is one of the few triple-A games I liked (that and the wonderful aesthetics of the HUD and world, and the gleefully odd controls, and the shooting shapes/planes of damage).

    The original suit.

    The Dead Space 2 suit.

Notice how angular the latter is, and how it even has a “gem” in the forehead. That is very typically Asian. I guess they might have been trying to appeal to an Asian market, and that’s fine, I love Japanese stuff myself. But still. In doing so it lost the original flavour of Dead Space and became much more homogeneous.

The first Dead Space suit might have been unique, but it’s a fucking barrel with holes and neon lights coming out of it. I don’t really care how much “personality” it has, if it looks stupid, then it looks stupid.

It’s functionality above all else. It’s there to serve a purpose, not to look good, but that’s still no excuse.

It’s not just the head, mind you, it’s the suit itself. I don’t understand how they could’ve gone so wrong. The silhouette of a characters is probably the most important part of character-design and the original Engineer suit looks awful.

The metal plates look useless and overcrowd the entire torso. What are they for, really? Do they protect the wearer?

@2&3: Well I always like the Engineering Suit. It does looks like a sci-fi engineer would wear in space and the metal plates visually does emphasizes armor/protection/safety against impact, hazardous condition in the space, etc. Especially in Dead Space 3 where upgrading the armor at bench, it shows the additional added plates on Isaac’s shoulder and body.

Personally, as an engineer myself I’m perfectly understand the Engineering Suit design choice over other suits in the sequels.
