Rayman Legends Wii U ‘to be huge system seller’, says Ubisoft

Tuesday, 26th March 2013 11:32 GMT By Dave Cook

Rayman Legends will help Nintendo sell more Wii U consoles, according to Ubisoft France’s Xavier Poix.

Speaking with GI.biz, Poix said, “Selling a new way of playing can take some time, and we know the power of the brands from Nintendo and we know from the fans that the majority of what will be the system sellers are not yet available. And on our side, Rayman will be one of them for sure. We really expect Rayman to be a huge system seller on the console.”

Ambitions are nice to see, but will Rayman Legends shift Wii U consoles considering it has also been confirmed for release on PS3 and Xbox 360? Won’t people just wait rather than splash out cash on Nintendo’s console? Let us know what you think below.

Thanks ONM.

Don’t know about it being a huge system seller?

It had more chance of that happening if it remained WiiU exclusive, now people can just buy it on their PS3/360 without having to buy a WiiU…

Yeah, because Rayman Origins was such a popular and huge game. It’s not like the game bombed on PS3/360 and they had to reduce its price dramatically to help it sell.

That game was fantastic and the Legends looks sublime on Wii U but this is NOT a system seller. Also, do they really believe that 2D Rayman can do what 2D freaking MARIO failed to?

    Shame, what could have been.

I’m happy for 360 and PS3 primary gamers who get to play it too, but it should have launched for Wii U fist.

    It truly deserved to :(
Both Ubi and the gamers betrayed RO. Ubisoft released it in the worst possible time (Within days of their own AC game and close to COD / Q4 rush) while gamers went for big budget AAA sequels & shooters instead of this gem.

Hopefully Legends does better. The level design and variety in Origins were insanely good and the sequel looks to be even better.

@2 Mario Didn’t fail to be a huge system seller. The attach rate for New Super Mario Bros U is insane. Its like 70-80% of people who bought a Wii U bought New Super Mario Bros U. If Nintendo didn’t launch with that game, the Wii U would have sold a lot less. The game has already broke 2.8 million units sold.

Not to mention, New Super Mario Bros U is one of those games thats going to sell the Wii U for years to come. Nintendo just needs a broader library of games.

Even the overly optimistic vgchartz has NSMBWU at 1.63m – where do you get the 2.8m figure from?

RO definitely didn’t sell well as it deserved to, but let’s be honest, did it really “bomb” badly? It doesn’t seem like Ubi’s development costs were that huge and the game was ported to almost every platform possible, so it couldn’t have been that bad. They must be making some money out of it, selling it as one of their ‘back-catalogue’ games these days. And on top of that, they’re actually making a sequel. RO also helped to rejuvenate the brand and make it relevant for current generation of gamers.

@8 There I think you are wrong. It was not a system seller. The system has sold itself to the fans and since there was no other great game to buy of course it sold a lot. If I had the money to buy a WiiU the system seller is ZombieU

If you expected it to be a huge system seller then why delay it?

Stupid Ubisoft, you shot yourself in the foot again. Come September my money is going on GTAV not rayman.

I’m scratching my head over this because Rayman Origins sold the most copies on PS3 than any other platform.

    According to VGChartz

    PS3 – 740,000
    360 – 580,000
    Wii – 480,000
    Vita – 310,000
    3DS – 30,000
PC – 30,000 <- Don't know if this is accurate tbh. I personally think this is a lot higher.

You just described the failure. Sure, Wii U would have sold a lot less without NSMBWU and it had a high attach rate but that’s not being a system seller.
    - A system seller is about the hardware numbers.
    - NSMBWU came out for Wii U.
    - Even after that, WiiU is still seriously lacking in hardware numbers.
= System seller failed. Super Smash Bros Melee on GameCube sold a LOT more than this and even that wasn’t a true system seller that could save GC.

Oh yeah, its going to be a great system seller as its a wiiu exclusive…
    Wait.

    @14,
True. If with a “system seller”, wiiu is tanking, then who knows what will save it. Just goes to show very few people buy a console for a single game, an entire package of value needs to be there. Almost negligible third party support will sink wiiu unless ninty do something about it. GC had ninty games you know.

I don’t think Origins was a failure, it has sold more than 2 million copies.
I am pleasantly surprised that vita version sold so much (sans digital, which generally occupies 1/3 of vita game sales). Wonder why this isn’t releasing on Vita then.

On what planet are Ubisoft from?

Rayman maybe a great game. But seriously… a hug system seller it has never been. Even on PS1 it was a niche game that sold very well but I am sure it wasn’t a system seller such as the likes of Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Monster Hunter, etc.

Yeah, Sure, people always buy a new Console for a Game they can play on a old Console they alreday have.

    A Perfect Logic.

And Yes, while I love the Rayman IP, its not a big Player when it comes to Sales. Maybe Legends will change that and sell 30Mio. Games, but I kinda doubt that.

Yup, when is the game going to be released? September innit?
By September we will surely know the release date and probably the price of PS4 and NextBox, and…we will all decide to buy a WiiU to play a game we can play on our old console.
    Smart.
I keep thinking that marketing guys are alien that don’t understand how the World really spins.
