Its about branding and name recognition. I could go to the mall and ask 100 people what the “Steam Box” is and I’d be lucky to get one person to tell me what it was, but just about everyone knows what a “XBOX” or a “Playstation” is (even if they don’t play or own one). No console launch goes off without a few 100 hitches. This time around? No, its not a competitor. But, it’s model might be the future of gaming.

They (Steam) should have made themselves a bigger deal in the mobile gaming scene to garner mind share within the casuals.

LOLz at MS. Typical monopolistic dinosaur thinking. Just get back to peddling your console and over-priced OS you goons. I quite like the Steam offer, and I like how it is not emblazoned on TV or with massive media campaigns trying to sell itself. Instead Steam just ticks along quietly, being progressive and fair to new developers, encouraging the community to forge its own gaming marketplace, look at how steam has altered in the time it has been going. The best kept secret in gaming today, In my view, Steam is the biggest thing to happen in video game history and one of valves greatest achievements. No restriction on which OS or hardware you can use, no restriction by country, no stupid limitations on where you can install games to, and best of all, millions of like minded people in a marketplace receptive to indie and small never heard of developers who will never see the light of day on MS’s console. If Steam can give me a replacement operating system withautomatic updates and total drive support, I would use it and scrub W7 tomorrow.

Valve should make their own version of Linux called “Steam OS”. I would definitely install it and support them because it’s clear that Microsoft has no idea where Windows is going next. We need a new innovator in the computer world that can help guide us to a better way of innovating.

Microsoft is continuing to be a dick…sorry for the language. But I am starting to disslike MS just more and more.

Yeah, Sega and Nintendo didn’t consider Sony a competitor in late 90s, then Sony was the king of videogames for a decade… Sega died and Nintendo almost disappeared.

Has Valve announced what hardware they are going to offer?

They could put a very potent little Mini ATX system together in a box, bundle it with their own OS and gaming interface, and it could work very very well, giving as good or better graphics than either new console whilst being totally uncontrolled by either MS or Sony.

Maybe this is the console to vote for?

Where’s the proof that Nintendo almost disappeared? Nintendo has won every single handheld generation to date. With the Gameboy color destroying the sales charts. Nintendo was never even close to “disappearing”.
