The dog track: Q1 and the next-gen countdown

The first quarter of a year is relatively dead for game releases, but Q1 2013 is teeming with top talent. VG247′s Dave Cook asks if this busy period signifies the countdown to next-gen.

It’s funny how big a difference a day makes. Most of us can’t wait to get through the expensive holiday season, share in fun with our friends, drink ourselves stupid and vow that next year we absolutely will go to the gym or stop smoking.

Then January 1 rolls around and it’s business as usual. We’re usually worse off financially, hung over, shattered and in desperate need of something fried to eat. The games industry used feel this hangover too, as it usually crawls out of bed about February and starts rolling along as if nothing happened, but 2013 will be different.

It’s about now that we in the gaming press let out a sigh of relief and look forward to a month or two of respite and rest, but looking forward to the first quarter – which is January to March by the way – the industry shows no signs of slowing down. At all.

There are many top-billing games out during that period, including DmC: Devil May Cry, BioShock Infinite, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Tomb Raider, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Aliens: Colonial Marines, SimCity, Rayman Legends, Gears of War: Judgment and God of War: Ascension to name just a few.

What about after that?

The triple-A schedule is barren after March, the recently-launched Wii U aside. That’s not to say that nothing will release – it’s just that there are few games with a solid release date beyond that month. Dead Island: Riptide is the only sizeable console release I can see with a firm launch date in place.

Why do we know nothing about what’s to follow?

It’s because next-gen really is coming.

The wheels are firmly in motion now, and studios have shifted focus to new hardware and new possibilities. The signs are all around you: from the unveiling of Unreal Engine 4 and the Luminous Engine by Square Enix, the slowing string of console exclusives on Xbox 360 and the silence from big players like Bungie.

We also have it on good authority that PS4 is getting a reveal before E3 next year, and that the specs are looking powerful indeed. In fact, we published an entire piece on what we know so far, and it points to some rather interesting developments on the horizon. Add to that the lack of Sony-exclusive IP launch after March 2013 – there are no games currently dated – and it’s clear the big players are readying for change.

When you consider the eleventh hour of old formats – take PS2 for example – it’s not uncommon to see a final push of strong IP that fully takes advantage of what hardware has to offer. After all, developers have spent almost a decade trying to figure out Xbox 360, and comparing its launch slate to games coming out now almost looks like a generational leap in itself.

But Microsoft’s rig has reached its limit. Developers and publishers often state to the contrary, but when games on the format become too vast – just look at the increasing need for multi-disc Xbox 360 releases for one – then it becomes apparent that new media and hardware is in demand.

It seems that a month can’t go by without someone unearthing a dusty old patent for wearable hardware or a tantalising next-gen rumour that something big is in the works at Microsoft and Sony.

But you don’t need to theorise about Xbox 720 and PS4′s reveals. The signs are already around you that it isn’t far off, and if I were a betting man I’d say that – based on what we’re seeing in plain sight – that an E3 2013 reveal is likely, closely followed by a rumoured autumn launch.

By ‘plain sight’ I mean that Microsoft has been morphing its approach right under our noses in preparation for whatever comes next. Look at SmartGlass – a utility that lets users combine their tablet and their Xbox 360 to create an asynchronous (there’s that word again) experience. Stack that against leaked documents from earlier this year that suggest the next Xbox will feature a tablet controller and the move seems less coincidental. (Thanks to LiveSide for the document link)

Microsoft’s addition of cloud storage seems to fit with the approach taken by Sony in its $380 million acquisition of Dave Perry’s GaiKai technology, Steam’s cloud-based functionality, and a swelling base of cloud experiences on iOS and Android. It’s clear that the cloud will be a prominent feature moving forward, but the evidence doesn’t stop with storage.

Xbox Music launched last month to go up against the might of Spotify and iTunes, offering a cloud-streaming service with a vast library of tracks. if Microsoft feels the need to launch a service like this – although some critics suggest it’s pissing into the wind – then it must have a future road map for the tech or service going forward. The service can’t have been cheap after all.

The circle begins to close as you realise that Xbox Music is available across Microsoft’s suite of devices and software – across Windows 8-enabled PCs, phones and even Surface – a whole family of connected devices that talk to each other and feature a range of asynchronous (there’s that word again) functions.

Wii U is lambasted the world over by critics of its tablet controller, but let me ask you this: how often do you sit playing a game, get stuck and then reach to your phone or tablet to look up a strategy guide or its wiki page?

Now imagine a format where you can do this without having to reach for that secondary, third party device made by Apple or Samsung, or get up to sit at your PC to get the information you need.

Microsoft doesn’t want your attention to waver for a second. It doesn’t want you to use someone else’s hardware to get the most out of its console, it wants a captive audience, and spreading its experience over a whole range of devices is exactly what it’s doing right now.

The company is blasting all sectors of the market – from consoles, streaming services and PCs, even TV set-top boxes if rumours are to believed – and the only piece of this Windows 8 jigsaw left to fit into place is the Xbox 720.

It’s coming, you better believe it’s coming, because the market is ready for it. Just don’t be surprised to see a tablet controller bundled with it when it does arrive, because it makes sense given our almost symbiotic relationship with intuitive touch screen devices like our phone or tablet.

Consider this: consoles have evolved dramatically over the years – with new features, increased spec and technical clout – but there is one vital element that hasn’t changed very much during this time, and that is the controller.

It’s the last vital component of consoles that Microsoft or any manufacturer can change – without releasing some brand of mad holographic play, or AR function (that’s currently Valve’s department) – so it makes sense that Microsoft would consider a tablet option.

We’re about to enter that last, insane dash towards the future of gaming, and while it means more work for your friendly neighbourhood VG247 news team, it’s going to be a thoroughly exciting race to witness.

Agreed.

Rumors about Battlefield 4 say that it will come out on current-gen consoles as well as next-gen. Same thing with Watch Dogs. And Rainbow Six Patriots.

I really think that till July we will know everything about next Xbox and PlayStation and that they will debut maybe even in November/December 2013.

I’m fine since I entered this gen really late. I will stay with my PS3 for at least more 2 years I hope

@3 It doesn’t have a solid release date though. That’s what I was saying :)
There are games, but no committed release dates. I think many publishers are figuring out how to best work alongside next-gen reveals.

Add to that the disappearance of Rainbow Six: Patriots and Watch Dogs after their reveals, the rumours surrounding Thief 4 and Mafia 3, and a slew of other rumblings, it seems like everyone is getting ready for the next step.

I’m thinking about getting Revengeance, will definitely get DmC. Bioshock Infinite, i do not care about. They have to show more footage to get me interested. There was a long, long pause and we have reason to believe that some of the gameplay promised in the footage material didn’t make the cut.

My biggest hope for 2013 is Prey 2. I’d love to hear that it’s back on track and that there will be new footage coming before it’s release. It looked so good and it’s one of the few games that has not been done yet. Seriously a sandbox bounty hunter game in a sci-fi setting? Amazing.

It is all fine and dandy, but i just hope games are still the main focus, and all the other things are extra added features, that while nice having, do not take away gaming their main relevance on the devices; for me should be all for the sake of gaming, the added features should enhance that notion. Secondly i just hope neither of sony and microsoft goes for always connected online to play single player games, because that will be a big detriment for me to get both consoles next gen, i just hope they are clear that gaming is the first thing they should need to think off, and gamers in second.

I sure hope so man. Cause there are clear examples now that show it’s really time for next-gen. As nice as Far Cry 3 is, it suffers from heavy screentearing and blurring on consoles and it’s clearly a game that was meant for much better consoles..but they aren’t around. Crysis 3 next year is gonna be another example. There are a few exceptions…Halo 4 and Hitman Absolution look great and run great. But yeah…next year has to be the introduction of the next-gen.

Well , at least you have many many games you didn’t play , so i dont blame you , i for one have been playing since 2007 on this generation consoles , i played all the normal and great games , I’m sick of it , even if the game is great like the last of us or gears of war the hype still gone , the tech is very old , just play fac cry 3 on consoles and then go play it in pc , you will understand why i want the next generation consoles in this moment , great ideas wasted on this old tech , it could be a lot better and really impress us …

6 years are enough for this generation , anyone says otherwise are new to this old consoles , the sooner it released the better for everyone , i will get what i want and by the time you get bored of these consoles , next generation consoles will be cheaper for you , it will be updated and fixed , you will see a huge collection of games , many friends of yours will move on to them and that will make you excited to play with them …etc

you see , it’s you who will have fun more then us since you just started playing , so believe it or i will kill you :P ..

May I provide a solution that’s much easier? Just make a console capable of pausing the game and browsing the net simultaneously like vita. I look out for trophy guides often and instead of reaching out to phone or tablet, I simply pause the game, open the web on vita, look out and then return to the game, all seamless.

Second screen idea feels like a marketing gimmick to me, a “devolution” of sorts just to allow a company to sell you 2 screens at once, often the most costly piece of tech in a device.
Almost everything that 2 screen systems do can be done on a single screen with no problems whatsoever. Only special thing remains is “remote play” stuff but that is also moot for people with constant access to televisions, and handhelds exist for that reason.

PC remained the same for all these years with same old trusty mouse and keyboard, do we really need new controllers to enjoy games now?

Otherwise, I agree with all other points. Next year will be amazing. At last a E3 with unbridled excitement.

@14 Yeah fellow Death, you are right. This happened to me when I bought my PS2, I bought it when the PS3 was already at the market but did have a very good experience with it. Hope they still continue to launch current gen titles for more time like they did with PS2. I would get the next gen if in my country consoles were cheaper.

@16 I’m with you Dragon, I don’t see the need to change the way we play, we did good with Analog Sticks and Buttons for almost 20 years and I’m still not bored of it. It’s like changing how we drive our cars, removing the pedals and adding a touchscreen to choose what to do, brake or accelerate.

I don’t know why anyone would wait until E3 to reveal their new machines. After all, no-one can show new games until the machines are revealed, I would guess. I would think it makes far greater sense to show new consoles in April-time, which would give a couple of quarters for awareness to be raised, questions to be answered, the “market” to get used to what’s on the way, get interested in what’s actually shown, and then, set it all off around the latter part of the year.

I don’t think E3 has the weight of importance. Why arbitrarily wait that long, when they could have extra time to present and market the key thing, the games, by bucking tradition, and put E3 squarely in its adapted place of an American video games expo?

“Just make a console capable of pausing the game and browsing the net simultaneously like vita.”

Wii-U can do this too, and it’s only just been added to Vita. Wii-U can do quite a lot of stuff whilst the game is paused (eShop, MiiVerse, Browser).

“Almost everything that 2 screen systems do can be done on a single screen with no problems whatsoever. Only special thing remains is “remote play” stuff but that is also moot for people with constant access to televisions, and handhelds exist for that reason.”

You can’t do local couch based MP asymmetric gaming on a single screen – something NintendoLand demonstrates well. ZombiU would also lose a lot with a single screen too. The way the screen works with the atmosphere is great. Hell even apps like Netflix are improved by having the second screen for info without overlaying on the main screen. So no – remote play isn’t the only special thing remaining.

Well, imo, the next gen is already here. If you are speaking strickly about graphics, and that is fools gold, then better looking systems will be here in a year or two. However if graphics are your defenition of next gen consoles, aren’t you already a PC gamer? If not, you should be(when MS/Sony put out new systems they will be dated graphicly vs PC before they even luanch).

I look at function and gameplay. I fully agree that WiiU controler changes everything. On so many levels.

So, imo, Nintendo has already kicked off the Next Gen. Sure I am looking forward to seeing what comes next from both Sony and MS. But while I wait…I am going to enjoy the WiiU. Prolly going to keep playing it even when the “Big” boys come out too, imagine that.

@DrDamn
“MP asymmetric gaming” cant be done on single screen, I agree. But it will never be the mainstay way to play games. Party based games and some others genres may get better, but most wont imo.
And about ZombieU, I can find at least as much, if not more people who agree with me that 2 screen feels awkward at best, not only on zombieu, but other games like ac armored edition too.

Also to people shouting “FIRST”, continue to do so.

2 screens may become standard, not because it makes sense to a some people, but because it makes business sense as I stated earlier.

Some things are innovations, some are gimmicks. Let me give an example, thumb sticks arrived on consoles nearly 2 decades ago, and still remain a preferred way to play.
Thats evolution.
Now lets see the latest out of fashion fad in gaming, motion controls. Which came in fashion 6 years ago and now sells nothing. It was successful, but people quickly got bored, a hallmark of a gimmick.

Anything game related (for single player) can easily be performed by a single screen , as has been done for 4 decades now.

PC gaming remains a great example of how hardware gimmicks are not needed to produce great games.

Maybe look at some less than glowing reviews of ac and zombieU.

Have something to say about motion controls? It also was a new way to play, but now…..
Moral of the story, new hardware gimmicks are not needed to make a great games as great games on PC shows.

Ever played Farcry 2, these same ideas of real time map viewing (with no pause in games), using phone and others were there. It was a bad idea for many at that time. But now since people have bought an expensive console to play those same ideas (which could easily be performed on single screen as demonstrated by FC2) in games, it becomes a fashionable thing and a thing for the future.

i am so happy with the wii u atm. the gamepad works great. it really is a game changer. the coop in mario for example is just plain awesome.
i am totally relaxed now and will just sit and wait what msony will bring to the table. i expect at least one of them coming out with a new console fall/winter 13, as dave described very well in this article, EVERYTHING screams for that. both will have tablets for sure, they will copy miiverse too and they really should because it is just great, if you used it once, you don´t want to go back to the boring xbl friendslist, writing mails with the controller (annoying), we don´t have to start with sonys social ambitions, it´s outdated and it shows while miiverse feels fresh and modern. that´s just how it is and that makes the wiiu a true next gen machine for me.
nintendo launched an awesome device with wiiu, they nailed the zeitgeist with this and it is perfect timing too.
i plan to buy either sony OR ms next gen. have wiiu and 3ds and will keep them but will only upgrade to ps4 or nextbox. the fight is, again, between msony.

@Dragon. i played nsmb u for 3 hours straight this saturday, coop with my girlfirend, she was on the pad helping me out by creating blocks and slowing down enemies, while i was mario doing his thing….long story short: it was awesome fun! girlfriend isn´t into gaming at all but she´s totally addicted to the game, next day first thing she wanted to do was playing mario. we only need a few levels and we´re through. i think it will be the first game she really “completed” and she truly enjoyed every second of it.
sure, a great game is a great game no matter how it looks or how the controll set up is BUT with the touchpad implemented well you can really have a game changer which adds a lot of fun to the game and lets harcore and casual gamers enjoy THE SAME GAME AT THE SAME TIME…i think that´s genius.

I really, _really, hope that Sony will team up with Google (and Android) on the PS4. That way we’d have that “all devices connected”-functionality out of the box. Not to mention you’d be able to play every Android game and use every Android app immediately on your PS4. No more waiting for a decent browser or a YouTube-app. Tablets, Phones, SmartTVs and PS4 all connected through Android.

@41
So you are saying you need to buy a hardware (by the way, I am referring to useless hardware which people feel essential for “innovations” , which just isn’t true) to comment on it? Not a very bright idea.

@43
I definitely haven’t bought it (as you can guess). I played it for 1-2 hours in one of biggest electronics markets (grey market I should add as official release schedule in my country follows eu launches with 2-3 days delay) and came out unimpressed. As I said earlier, these ideas are present in many games like FC2 and are pretty well implemented on a single screen. These ideas are great, that’s why fc2 is one of the best games this gen for me. Let me add Last of Us here too, which has real time resource management on a single screen and from what I have seen so far (E3), looks great.
Ideas don’t need hardware, they need great software.

As I said, what happened to all-mighty motion controls now? Still waiting for a great game which sells me on that.

My problem is all these “new” ideas are not new, they are here for years and well implemented in countless games. But many people just brand them “new and revolutionary” as now its attached to a specific console.
I am very skeptical about these “exotic” hardware since I was completely right about motion gaming, which sucks to this day.

@46
“You like JRPGs but can’t see how the pad would help genres like that? I’m glad you don’t develop games! ”
Well, I would have revisited my opinion IF a JRPG , good or not was even slated for release in wiiu launch window, let alone launch.

@47 Thinking about it, if Sony and MS follow Nintendo with the gamepad idea, Xbox will have the Surface and Windows Phone, but sony don’t have tablets or phones that have a unique OS (they have only one tablet in their products but I don’t know wich OS it have, think it’s android), if google can give them the license to use android this could be their second screen. And you got admit there’s a lot of people with android, more than people with iPhones. Sony can atract a bigger consumer base with this. But Google is a question mark, you never know what they will do until BANG it’s here!
This is a very wild assumption, but could work

The core problem with Smartglass or Vita/Android interactivity is that it’s not standard and will never feel part of the same system. A screen in your standard controller is intrinsically linked and tied to the system. That’s part of what makes it work.
