Wasteland 2 sci-fi to be scrutinised by academic consultants

To ensure wasteland 2's post-apocalyptic fiction is plausible, inXile has enlisted the services of a scientific consultancy firm.

Experts in evolutionary biology, nuclear physics and medicine from Montreal-based gaming science consultancy Thwacke will work with inXile to "add depth and believability to the wasteland, its people, its creatures and its afflictions".

The collaboration is expected to being "interesting science" to the crowd-funded RPG's fiction, with Thwacke CEO Sebastian Alvarado saying the team is keen on "creating moments where the player feels the line blur between reality and fiction".

As a result of Thwacke's involvement, the two companies hope Wasteland's creatures will make sense in their environments, biological and chemical weapons will be realistic, and survival in apocalyptic conditions will be true-to-life.

Naturally, inXile can't actually tell us what Thwacke is doing without giving away spoilers, but we do know they've utilised entomologists, nuclear engineers, surgeons and geologists.

"The more smart guys we have in room looking at the writing and design is always a good thing and in this case we have a group of very bright people checking our work," inXile's Brian Fargo said.

Wasteland 2 is expected on PC in October 2013.
