TGS 2012 - over 70% of games at show are for mobile, tablets

TGS 2012 is still in full swing this weekend, and while quite a bit of gaming news has come out of the event, it seems that the majority of titles on-hand are for platforms other than handheld, console and PC.

According to figures calculated by IGN, over 70% of the games at the show are for mobile and tablets. While this may sound a bit disconcerting to core gamers, it's really not surprising in the least considering the Japanese mobile market has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last three years.

Granted, many of the games on display at the event are or will be available for multiple formats. Still, with 507 out of 715 games at TGS 2012 available for platforms other than the traditional gaming device, it proves that mobile is the most popular format in Japan at present. Titles on hand for consoles, PC and handhelds numbered 208.

Here's the official breakdown from IGN:

  • iOS/Android Phones & Tablets: 365
  • Other smartphones: 142
  • PlayStation 3: 57
  • Nintendo 3DS: 34
  • PC: 32
  • PSP: 30
  • PlayStation Vita: 24
  • Xbox 360: 24
  • Wii: 5
  • Wii U: 2

Genres available at the show were also broken down, and unsurprisingly, there are more RPGs at the show than any other genre. It's widely known Japan favors the genre, but action games are also popular, as you can see via the figures below.

  • Role-playing: 148
  • Action: 118
  • Others: 116
  • Simulation: 96
  • Online Card Game: 48
  • Sports: 31
  • Tactical Role-playing: 24
  • Card game: 23
  • Online role-playing: 21
  • Shooting: 21
  • Adventure: 14
  • Puzzle: 11
  • Racing: 11
  • Action adventure: 8
