Unreal Engine 4 is “supremely scalable,” games could be ported to Wii U

Saturday, 14th July 2012 17:46 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Epic VP Mark Rein has said the firm doesn’t intend to “bring Unreal Engine 4 to Wii U,” the console will, however, support ported games developed with the tech.

Speaking with Videogamer at Develop, Rein reiterated the new console from Nintendo can handle Unreal Engine 3.

“We have Unreal Engine 3 running on Wii U,” Rein said. “You saw games at the Nintendo press conference again this year – a fantastic demo by our friends at Warner Bros. showing Arkham City running on Wii U. And Aliens: Colonial Marines is coming on Wii U, that’s also Unreal. There’s, I’m sure, several others. Mass Effect was announced for it as well. So we’re certainly playing a role there with Unreal Engine 3.

“I’ll state that I don’t think it’s our intention to bring Unreal Engine 4 to Wii U, but Unreal Engine 4 is going to be supremely scalable. We’ll run on mobile phones and on a wide variety of things, so if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could. But Unreal Engine 3 is a really good fit for that platform.”

Epic Games has previously stated it hasn’t announced Unreal Engine 4 support on platforms other than PC, and during GDC, the firm’s president, Mike Capps told G4TV Unreal Engine 4 wouldn’t support Wii U.

Fornite will be the first game released to support the new tech, and for now it’s a PC-exclusive; however, Epic has said it hasn’t “ruled out the possibility of other platforms later.”

They made it impossible to bake lightmaps, so clearly they weren’t focusing on scalability that much…

Well, at least we know the Wii U is as powerful as a mobile phone.

Unreal 4 fixes that with dynamic global illumination. Can even do it on the fly.

@3 Point is, realtime GI is pretty demanding, therefore the engine could be far more scalable, if they supported static lightmaps.

SUre but Unreal 3 was not built for being scalable across all platforms unlike UE4 which is created to be scalable from mobile OS to next gen.

And thats a plus compare to the wii, i mean in the third party side of things, they will have more time to scale the game adding nice things to the control gamepad, because graphics will not chunck all of their time and effort, i think this is good news, maybe it will run a 3.5 and thats all they need IMO.
