Day Z mod drives ArmA 2 sales up 500%

Although it’s still in alpha, open-world zombie survival mode Day Z has done wonders for sales of military simulator ArmA 2.

“There’s no doubt that the thrilling Day Z mod currently drives Arma 2 Combined Operations sales on Steam,” Bohemia Interactive’s Marek Španěl told Kotaku.

“Sales have increased almost fivefold from how they were before Day Z’s Alpha release.”

The ArmA II developer plans to work support for the mod into its next official patch.

“Considering the mod’s popularity we are committed to do some related work in the next Arma 2 update (1.61),” Španěl said.

“We are actively communicating about how we could best support the Arma 2 user community especially in multiplayer and Day Z players are right now a significant portion of people actively playing the game, so of course it’s high on our priority list to support it the best we can.”

The mod is actually led by Dean Hall, a New Zealand lad and one of Bohemia’s own staffers, who told that ArmA 2 was the perfect base for the game he had in mind.

“You look at the ArmA engine – it is built for this. It was begging for this to be made,” he said.

“It’s got realistic ballistics, it handles large quantities of AI. Despite people’s criticisms of its netcode, it is very flexible and can handle problems. Particularly with the recent 1.6 patch, there’s a little bit of rubber banding, but that means it’s quite forgiving.

“All these aspects are what is needed to do what I call a ‘mature Minecraft’”.

An apt comparison; the mod is lighting up the Internet in a very similar way to Mojang’s phenomenally successful sandbox. Check out the trailer below and visit the webpage for more info.

@1 Its original because ARMA is huge game so this add another level.

Zombies done properly is original, someone criticising without bothering to read up on the subject = not original.

Yeah GF told me about this other day, guess it’s going viral.

Still, I ain’t paying the full asking price for Arma2+expansions for just one mod.

Hopefully they’ll discount it soon, so that they can get even more sales.

Even if it’s just a mod in alpha stage with plenty of bugs, this is already the best game of the year BY FAR, and easily the best zombie game ever released. The huge open world and immersive realism of Arma 2 is just so perfect for the zombie setting.

I was already a big fan of Arma before this mod came along, so I already had the games, but for anyone who’s concerned about paying full price just to try out a mod that’s still in the early stages of development, just wait a little while. Arma 2 will almost certainly feature in Steam’s summer sale which starts in June. Hopefully by then, the mod will be running a little smoother anyway.

Been following this for several weeks, but I doubt Arma will play on my PC :(

Pity it doesn’t have slow, shuffling zombies though, then it’s be perfect in my eyes.

In order for slow zombies to be a threat in games there needs to be a few different things going on, either they take tonnes to punishment before they go down, you break the controls so getting away from them is difficult OR you have hundreds of them everywhere.

So in something like Arma where the engine dies once you get over 100 AI entities having a proper herd of zombles was never going to happen.

I like the concept, but as it stands, with ARMA3 round the corner and the mod developer intending to continue development on the mod with ARMA3 and the general bugginess of the mod right now, I’ll wait for ARMA3.

Its not all that buggy, its not like it breaks constantly its just what Arma is like really. For me its never done anything all that wrong apart from some zombies spazzing out now and again. Which just kinda adds to the atmosphere.

It really is great. It really is like nothing else on the market (other Arma mods aside of course).

Kinda like Cry of Fear, theres a fanbase for these kinds of games that are not being met by developers anymore.

    I agree completely with absolutezero.

There is no longer any true “survival horror” games like there used to be. Perfect example is the evolution of the resident evil series, you were once scrounging for ammo, and now you have no idea where to keep it all.

I play DayZ with several friends, and nothing feels more righteous then scrounging for ammo, fighting off bandits at the brink of starvation, passing out constantly from a lack of blood X-D, and most of all keeping each other alive.

O yeah, and after a whole night of playing, dying in a gunfight. You are flipping pissed, but only because the game actually moves you enough to be so. So you stop, grab a coke, play something else, but the next day your only thinking about getting back into DayZ
