Lost Planet 3 out early 2013, Spark Unlimited developing

Tuesday, 10th April 2012 12:27 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Lost Planet 3 is a real thing. The sequel, unveiled at Captivate, shows Spark Unlimited is developing the game for an early 2013 launch on PS3 and 360.

Lost Planet 3′s rebooted logo.

Capcom is set to launch Lost Planet 3 early next year, the publisher announced in Rome last week at Captivate. The game’s debut video got out ahead of a general 4pm embargo this afternoon.

The trailer begins with a man named Jim running from a creature chasing after him in a station of some sorts. The pair then emerge to the series’s traditional snowy environment, where a standoff brews between the two.

jim shoots the creature chasing after him, but comes across a second monster. He has run of ammo and legs it to find a frozen mech, which emerges after being ‘awoken’.

Bleeding from his earlier encounter, Jim gets into the mech and sees the second enemy run away. A bigger monster then appears to take on the mech, but is eventually taken down.

A storm is then approaching on the horizon, to which the man in the mech escapes from. The game’s new logo then appears and confirms a 2013 launch for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Spark Unlimited, who did Legendary: The Box and Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, is developing the game. The past two games have been made internally at Capcom in 2006 and 2010 respectively for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. A PC SKU for LP3 wasn’t mentioned in the trailer.

Spark is working on two games.

@5 One is a sequel to a well known sci-fi series (this) the other is a new IP, doubt that’s Battlefront 3.

Lost Planet 1 – was mediocre
Lost Planet 2 – was a piece of shit

    Spark Unlimited?

    I’m sorry, what?

While Lost Planet 2 was really disappointing, at least it wasn’t made by the developers of Fall of Liberty and Legendary: The Box.

Guess Capcom learned nothing from the disaster that was RE Operation Raccoon City… And had at least a dev with one or 2 decent titles on PSP.

    Spark are terrible terrible developers.

Liberty was a clusterfuck of a game. What the fuck are Capcom doing? LP2 was a great attempt at making a Monster Hunter style game attractive to the West. If played with 4 other people its actually a hell of alot of fun, much like every other game of the type (L4D etc).

    #10 3 years ago
  11. Erthazus

Ahhh, these guys who made Legendary and Turning Point? LOL

CAPCOM, what the fuck are you doing? Lost Planet 3 will be worse then past two games which already sucked ass. Jeebus.

What the fuck Capcom, seriously? I mean i never really feel in love with the series, but like EVERY single series you have, it had alot of potential. To give this game to Spark is a huge mistake.

“we should all be sad that its not battlefront 3 :,(”

No, we should be jumping for fucking joy that Spark haven’t (at this stage at least) been confirmed as having any sort of involvement with a potential Battlefront sequel.

You cannot sit there, as an actual human being with a working brain and bodily functions and tell me honestly that you would want that pack of assclowns working on a Battlefront title?

    (From my other post)
Capcom Exec 1: Hey, who are these Spark Unlimited guys?

Capcom Exec 2: They are the people behind Legendary: the Box & Turning Point: Fall of Liberty.

Capcom Exec 1: OMG, western gamers loved those games. Right?

Capcom Exec 2: Yeah, we should totally get them to make Lost Planet 3.

Capcom Exec 1: What other property we have left? How about giving Onimusha series to Kuma games and get Dino Crisis to people behind that popular shooter Postal 3?

    #20 3 years ago
  21. daytripper

@20 Dino Crisis is being done by the Vampire Rain guys

  23. ManuOtaku

Well i kind of like lost planet 1, the second one i didnt play it, but lets hope this is more like asuras warth than resident evil opperation raccon city, and i mean in the quality of the game, i did like a lot asuras warth so i havent lose all my faith in the capcom colaboration games

  25. The_Red

My bad, got the wrong info. It’s definitely the Vampire Rain guys. The Postal 3 people are probably behind the new Mega Man.

@25 just waiting for telltale games to announce their working on the next half life game and its all set

    #26 3 years ago
  27. LOLshock94

@19 you dont think they should be given another chance? because most of there games feel like they have been rushed but spark has been making this since 2010, so they have been given a good amount of time to make this game awesome.

    #27 3 years ago
  28. StolenGlory

You could give them all the time in the world and they’d still fuck it up royally in my opinion. And also, since when has extended dev time been any sort of effective barometer for quality in the finished product?

Put simply, I can think of a whole host of other devs that I would want to make SW:BF3 before Spark get their hands on it. What mystifies me though, is going on their abysmal track record, why ANYONE would think it a good idea to hand them the coding duties for anything.

It’s not like they have a rocking CV is it?

    #28 3 years ago
  29. LOLshock94

@28 look at hideo kojimas list of games before metal gear solid, he made some pretty shitty games before solid and look where he is now! and i agree that time doesnt make a game good but judging the games they have been it would be nice to see what they could develop if they had enough time.

^theres the trailer! it is kinda shit thou

  31. StolenGlory

I would agree with you were it not for the fact that before MGS, Kojima actually made some decent games – Policenauts being just one of them.

Spark on the other hand, haven’t done anything, not one thing worthy of note.

Which is why I don’t understand why they’ve been given code duties on this. I guess it just cements the fact that Capcom really couldn’t give two shits about the quality of their outsourcing.

man i loved lost planet 1. played the hell out of it on the 360 when it came out. played mp for countless hours. it´s a great franchise! the story was kind of confusing but i truly loved the artdesign. it was a western/jap. mix. was perfect imo. i had the highest hopes for LP2 but they really killed it. that game was shit. i was really upset about that because i waited for a sequel just after i finished the first one…so it was a pretty long wait. now these new developers could make it even worse and finish it off completeley. i mean legendary and turning point belong to the most uninspired and shitty games this´s sad. surprise me. prove me wrong. please.

    i like the trailer….

    New shots are in.

    #33 3 years ago
  34. OrbitMonkey

Well I really liked that trailer… From the shots, it looks like piloting the mechs will be in first person… And maybe third times the charm for Spark?

    Cautiously optimistic.

Oh and I’m glad it’s gone back to the icy wastes look of the origional and it seems the protagonist will have a bit more character than Wayne from LP1.

wow the shots look great. i agree orbit, it really has a lp1 vibe to it. i really liked that snow environment. it would be so great if this turns out to become a hit. i´d really like to see LP become the awesome franchise it should have become after the good start of lp1! it has so much potential.

@37 Yeah,I know,I reckon guys from Visceral aren’t very fond of this news although they should not be threatened by this second grade(at best) franchise.

Btw it IS definitely coming for PC as well project lead confirmed it at the end of this video.

  40. absolutezero

According to superannuation none of the staff working on this at Spark had anything to do with either Legendary or Turning Point, not even the Lead.

At least thats some good news. Its not being made by a bunch of monkeys, thats something I guess.
