PlayStation business aiming to be number one, says Hirai
New Sony boss Kaz Hirai has made no bones about it: he wants PlayStation to be in the number spot in the industry.

The new chief earmarked the games business, Sony’s digital imaging arm – cameras, basically – and mobile to be the three main areas the company can strengthen itself with.
Hirai was speaking as part of Sony’s Q3 financial conference call yesterday morning.
Hirai will take over as Sony CEO and president on April 1 from Sir Howard Stringer, who will take up a role as chairman of the board at the company from June.
Thanks, Andriasang.

It’s never bad to dream big, it’s how you approach that big dream that matters.
And hopefully unlike the last CEO he doesn’t pull a $599 US dollars…
You know.. I wonder if he’ll still come to E3s. I mean it would be pretty boss; the CEO of the entire damn Sony Corporation still talking to his gaming fanbase

A little less $599 and a little more common sense in the next box please, Sony.

Sony has been no.1 in last two generations and in this generation too ps3 will be either first or second most selling console. Also sony is getting vast royalty partly due to ps3 as it helped sony to win the format wars.

#2 Ghz, they will be the first in 20 years, it’s all part of a huge plan: Pakistani and Argentina numbers will contribute, they’ll keep on selling the thing for decades in emerging markets and then come out to start the usual smacktalk about combined figures. While MS will just discontinue 360.

There was a time when it looked like PS3 had a chance to catch 360 in global sales before the next gen hits, but not anymore. Only hefty price cuts would have saved them from 3rd place but with the huge losses Sonys gaming division is making that simply cannot happen.
There has never been a shadow of doubt that Wii would finish anything but first place. Thats a done deal already. It could stop selling right now and still guarantee a win.

@6, Sure, Sony’s only like 3 million behind despite Microsoft having nearly an entire year head start. To put it simply, Microsoft has sold only 5% more, total.

@7 – true, but look at games sold for each console, not just consoles sold. 360 multiplatform games outsell PS3 by a decent amount if you look a the monthly sales reports. That is right in line with the fact that everyone I know that has a PS3, uses it mainly as a bluray player and entertainment machine, and for it’s exclusives, mainly GT 5.

@#8 – Which the PS3 has so many of (Exclusives). Not every mulitplat sells more and plays better on the Xbox. Also, not every or majority PS3 owner uses the PS3 for Bluray only. (stand-a-lone BDplayers cost much less than a PS3) That’s like saying every Xbox owner only plays Halo. Enough with this garbage!
In addition, the PS3 has out sold the Xbox every year since 2009 and came very close in 2007 and 2008. Basically every full year the PS3 has been out, it has been doing as good or better than the Xbox all while having a higher price….just saying
