Star Wars Galaxies servers closed forever

The dust has settled over the final battles of Sony Online Entertainment’s long-lived Star Wars Galaxies. The subscription-based MMO’s servers signed off today after eight years of operation, the closure triggered by the expiration of a contract, this month’s launch of BioWare’s The Old Republic, and questions of financial sustainability. The much-treasured universe went down fighting, in the last throes of the Galactic Civil War. So long, Star Wars Galaxies, and thanks for all the mouse droids.

    Thanks Brenna

For all its flaws, this MMO will always hold a special place in my heart (pre-cu/nge). 8 year investment lost. Its almost like the Bankers have rolled in again lol

It’s a shame that when MMO’s die that the companies don’t publish the server side software. People can play on hacked Wow and Everquest servers, it would be cool if all these MMO’s that are dead would become open source. I understand why galaxies wont have that, as Lucasarts wants everyone to go to SWTOR but games like Asheron’s call 2 would have been nice.
