In a video celebrating the fourth birthday of the Rock band franchise, Harmonix staffers admitted to qualms about going head-to-head with a franchise they’d created.
“It was a rough, scary time for us because we had to make a game to compete with our other game, that we made, that we love,” art director Ryan Lesser said.
“Guitar Hero wasn’t ours to make any more. We had to make something better. And that was hard.”
“That was just the way it was, we didn’t own the Guitar Hero IP,” Greg LoPiccolo, senior VP of product development, added.
“When that became valuable it was purchased by Activision.”
“Guitare Hero was a great brand,” said former COO Mike Dornbrook said.
“We did invent that brand name. And the logo, and the box, and everything. So… Going up against your own creation was interesting.”
