Back in March, it was revealed through a French website that Cyanide was working on an RPG for A Game of Thrones alongside Genesis, its RTS based on the series. Fast forward to the present, and it has been revealed by Cyanide studio director Yves Bordeleau, that the game is indeed in the works and has been for quite some time.
Speaking with Kotaku, Bordeleau confirmed earlier rumors that the game’s narrative will be set alongside the events in A Game of Thrones, telling the story of two characters, and switching back and forth between them as the story intersects. None of the characters from the book will be playable in the game, but as rumored earlier this year, plenty will appear in the game.
While Cyanide has been working on the game since 2009, and acquired the rights long before it knew HBO would be doing a series based George R.R. Martin’s novels, the firm worked out a deal with the cable channel to use some its assets and character designs. Even a few of the actors from the show will provide dialogue for the game.
“We entered the agreement late in the game, unfortunately,” Bordeleau said, “but we managed to have a lot of characters and locations modeled [after the series.]”
Bordeleau also confirmed the game’s a turn-based RPG with real-time battle allowing the player to give orders to troops, but he promised that giving the AI orders wouldn’t slow the game down.
“You pause the game to give orders, but it doesn’t really pause, it slows the time down,” he explained. “You can see something coming and react to it.”
It was explained that the gameplay would be more akin to Knights of the Old Republic and the first Mass Effect, and since it is “all about the storyline,” fans of Planescape: Torment would find a lot to like about the RPG. Some of the player’s actions and choices in the game will even have “consequences,” regarding the game’s main story.
More details are to be announced “very soon,” and Cyanide hopes to release the game sometime during early 2012.
