McCaig: Respawn’s first game not arriving until 2015

Respawn concept artist Iain McCaig has said at Develop that the studio’s first game won’t release until at least 2015. 2015.

He made the bombshell at a keynote at the event in Brighton.

“Thanks to the internet, you can take things and use them as you want, no matter what the law says about it. I think this means there will be a whole new way of using and sharing things,” said McCaig.

“I’m having the most fun working with Respawn Entertainment right now, and I hate that I can’t show you guys what I’m doing there until 2015.”

This is only after the studio’s website had shown what appeared to be a blurred image of concept art from the game, which suggested it was further along in development.

Respawn was founded by ex-Infinity Ward bosses Vince Zampella and Jason West after the pair were fired by Activision. The developer’s first game will be published by EA Partners, and is said to be a sci-fi shooter affair.

Thanks, Develop.

My jaw nearly hit the floor when I seen that. I knew it would be long. Just not that long.

I guess they’re jumping straight to the next batch of consoles then.

That’s just ridiculous. Probably 3 new Call of Duties until then.

2015?
wouldn’t new consoles be out by then?
because i know they don’t even have a 8th gen console dev kit.
unless they are working on an engine right now

Let me get this straight again. He’s not saying it’s coming out in 2015, he says they are not going to be able to show anything until then?

@10 He could be talking about an agreement he made with the company regarding his work.

Given that they’re already teasing the game, I strongly doubt that they’ll be dead silent until 2015.

He doesn’t actually mention the games release with a word, so the title itself is conjecture, but given Zampella and Wests record, I’m pretty sure EA wouldn’t mind waiting quite a few years to get their hands on their next big franchise.

4 years isn’t long to wait if you’re going to be harvesting 20 million sales a year.

They’ll have to keep up with any possible technological advancements working in that time scale. 5 years… it better be good then… no pressure.

Yeah … like others have said, 5 years from NOW is not a good time. There will be a lot of changes, especially new consoles. So do they have access to the new tech right now? I’m not sure (as in, I doubt it, unless it’s a PS Vita or Wii-U game). The thing is, I don’t think they’ll be able to sell a ps3 or 360 game in 5 years when the new consoles are already out; sales would be abysmal.

God ****** Dammit. Why? WHHHYYYYY!? Hopefully they reconsider their strategy and release the game before 2014 (Unless they are making a next gen game for PS4 / Xbox 3).

So… did he say something else more specific that wasn’t quoted? Because I think Develop and VG247 are making a pretty big assumption here. For all you know, he could be working on a different game (than their first) that is going to be saved for the next-gen consoles or whatever. He does NOT say “our first game isn’t coming out until 2015.”

Even assuming that that is the case, I think that’s a big mistake. Not because of new consoles, but because most people won’t care about them anymore. The time to strike was ASAP after they left Activision in a huff, not 5 years after the fact. They had the people on their side, but in 2015, they’re just another new studio comprised of a few guys who created something good a decade ago.

Why is everybody lobbying for a token rushed release? Isn’t cheap tricks and fast profits the sort of thing that politically correct gamers are against these days?

By all means McCaig doesn’t mention any kind of release in those quotes, but Zampella and West aren’t going to suddenly become worse design leads because they take their time shaping a new IP. It’s worth considering that they had to build an actual studio first.

Of course they have a lot to live up to, and they’re not likely to launch CoD 2.0, but arguably what they put out will recieve attention, and in my opinion, will likely be of a quality that’s worth considering, no matter what the year is.

I doubt it will be earlier than 2013, personally.

@19: I can understand your argument, but 2015 is a … well considering the size of the team and the fact that it’s probably a FPS and probably doesn’t include open world gameplay. That’s way too long. It should be 3 years max.

I’m confused why everyone’s so shocked.

Assuming they are making their own engine, that takes years.

4 years sounds about right for a new studios first next gen project.

@20 Again, nobody said it was coming out in 2015, that’s Develops claim. The concept artist said he couldn’t show anyone what he was doing until then. It might be a hint that it’s coming out in 2015, it might not be. He never actually said what he’s quoted for in the title of this article.

Secondly, we have no idea what they’re doing, or what they have in mind. It’s highly likely that they’ll be adapting to a new engine (and they could even be making their own) all the while trying to shape a new IP, which probably needs to have enough legs for a franchise.

At the start of this month, the studio was listing 53 employees. That’s hardly a full AAA team, and certainly not enough for full on production.

I’m pretty sure that EA don’t intend to fund a dev project that’s scheduled to last 5 years…

It takes 3 years, max, to develop a title from scratch. Especially if you’re not working on anything else.

Given that they’ve been working on something since 2010, I seriously doubt that 2015 when Respawn’s first title is due.

They’re either building their own engine and the game or using an already existing engine and making the game for the next gen consoles.

He is probably talking about the NDA he signed with ReSpawn. It’s common in the Illustration/concept art field for people to sign NDAs, where they can’t show there work up until a certain period of time. This period of time normally starts after the release of the product. So i am guessing if he said he can’t show his work till 2015 than that means the game is coming out in 2013.

ps (NDA= non-disclosure agreement)
