Microsoft: Leaked Gears 3 build “not representive” from final game

Microsoft is investigating an unfinished build of Gears of War 3 leaked to torrent sites over the weekend.

The version of Gears of War 3 popping up on torrent sites over the last few days is, in a lucky break for Epic, not the consumer version

“We have seen the reports of Gears of War 3 content being propped on the Web and working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation,” Microsoft told VG247.

“This content is not from a final build and is not representative of what fans will enjoy when the game launches worldwide on September 20, 2011.”

The only version that has been leaked thus far is the developer copy that works only on modified debug Xbox 360s. That said, if you’re heavily invested in the Gears of War 3 storyline, you may want to plug your ears right about now since information about the story is sure to find its way online shortly.

The build is not completely finalized, but is rumored to include the full single-player and much of the multiplayer content.

Gears of War 3 launches on September 20 worldwide.

Clearly that only PC games that get leaked on the web ..not consoles ones

…right ? :(

or what I’d just said is a complete BS ..but ofcourse all the hype about the sales difference between console and PC games is gonna get in motion here just in a bit …

but let me tell you something 95% of PC gamers buy their games digitally
and these transactions and these sales don’t take part in the sales reports
so please stop criticizing PC gamers about piracy .. we’ve a saying that if your house is made of glass ,don’t throw stones on people …get the memo ?!!! :-S

PC & Console gamers have their glass houses ..so stop the hatred between both ..please

Debug 360? So what? Is this a problem for the release group to fix it?

Soon xbox 360 players are going to enjoy this game :D faster then everyone else.

Anyway, Xbox 360 pirates enjoy any game by month earlier then the others :D

It’s not a surprise. Remember Crysis 2?
Or Half-Life 2 that was leaked by one year earlier? (but a shitty debug version)

I guess giving Ice-T that early copy wasn’t a good idea.

As far as I know all 360 games get pirated, they just don’t get pirated nearly as much.

#4 You do know that a debug copy is just another way of saying the development version right? Also HL2 wasn’t leaked by somebody from inside Valve, but it was a german kid who hacked his way into their server and “stumbled” upon HL2. (I have to assume that Gears 3 was leaked by a dev since it is first of all a debug version, which doesn’t leave the building, and secondly, we haven’t heard from the media or Epic that they have been hacked).

Gears of War 2 XP boost, Gears of War 3 ‘leaked’ …PR bullshit

So that Locust queen does turn out to be Markus’ mother then, well that was obvious. Dont think they’ve shown us that ‘Rick’ character yet, seems like he’s quite important too going off the ending.

@14 You’d be surprised how careless some developers are with their stuff. I used to know a games zine editor who had no problem getting himself a debug console from Microsoft, and he regularly got fairly early builds from developers on both consoles and PC.

Obviously the intelligent thing to do would be to watermark the code. Most music publishers do that with the copies they send out.

So, if a consol game gets leaked is a PR stunt, while a PC game leak is viewed as “THE CANCER THAT’S KILLING THE PC MARKET”.

Sounds perfectly fine.

@2 – The same way it always happens. Someone disenfranchised with the dev (possibly recently fired) leaked the copy he had access to.

Actually, it could happen in loads of different ways…

Anyone in the entire external testing process (testers, organisers or even staff working at the external testing location), from any demos/previews/press events that Epic may have done, hacking, cleaning staff, genuinely misplaced/lost copies that staff took for testing, etc, etc.

Regardless, if the copy is up to 4 months prior to release, it’s very likely to be a great big A-class bug fest. Especially so when you consider that they managed to trigger a game breaking bug within a few seconds of gameplay during the reveal on Jimmy Fallon a few weeks back.

EDIT:

This joint Epic/MS statement was released about a day ago:

“We have seen the reports of Gears of War 3 content being propped on the Web and working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation. This content is not from a final build and is not representative of what fans will enjoy when the game launches worldwide on September 20, 2011.”

@18 Neither is relevant with regards to piracy, since this sort of thing will never make a dent sales.

I can see why people might think that it could be a PR stunt for the very same reason, but ultimately I’m fairly sure that developers would like to keep their stuff inhouse and completely control what gets out until gameday.

This is so wrong that its not even funny you think they are going around carrying a disk from place to place. No it’s all worked of a database and server of EPIC. They don’t run around with discs in their hand with various builds in disc format laying around. No they keep it all on a server for everyone in the work place to have access to it and for it to be updated. There will be older builds in different part of the server for reference as well.

nothing have changed at Microsoft they know who buys and who hacks
so they just keep an eye on the direct share links such as megaupload filesconinc and put them down like they always do and keep the eyes on YouTube from preventing some work though

@23:

The game is kept on the server within the studio until there’s a need to put it on DVD, obviously.

But how exactly do you think that they demo the game outside of their office if they don’t put the latest builds on DVD!??

How do you think they were able to demo it on Jimmy Fallon, or at E3, for example? Hmm…?

@25 well, actually they don’t put it on DVD but on the hard-drive of the debug kit, the reason being that it’s too easy to “misplace” a DVD, and also the file sizes are usually too big for DVDs as a developper copy is most of the times too large a file.

@26 if i may add something here, @25 A dev copy is never ever supposed to leave the building, It is in the dev house the debug consoles are located, usually the only ones that might have a debug console at their home, are those in the company that are pretty high up, such as the CEO and the lead prorammer, etc etc. Not your everyday worker.
