Carmack believes Vita could possibly end up competing with Sony’s Xperia

Tuesday, 14th June 2011 19:48 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

John Carmack has implied that it’s going to be a bit hard for Vita to compete in the “post-smartphone world.”

Speaking in a much quoted interview with Gamespot, id Software’s resident rocket scientist said that while he has yet to get a good look at Vita, he believes Sony has “learned a lot from the PS3, and they’ve gone out of their way to make sure that the development is as easy as possible,” on Vita.

“However, I wouldn’t want to be the executive making the decision to launch a new portable gaming machine in the post-smartphone world,” said Carmack who thinks Vita could end up competing with Sony’s Xeperia.

“I think that they’ve picked as eminently a suitable hardware spec as they could for that, they’re going to have you program for it like a console, so it’s going to seem twice as powerful as a smartphone with the exact same chips in there.

“But of course, by the time they actually ship, there may be smartphones or these tablets with twice as much power as what they’re shipping with on there. And a year or two after that, it’s going to look pretty pokey. You make a game that’s fun and quick to do, and you grab low-hanging fruit with the technology there. So, even if that plays out, such that people find that they can easily bring over their full-on, full-blown AAA console titles and put it on [the Vita], that’s going to give it a reason for existence.”

Im pretty sure that Vita will win, it has better control, better upgrade in memories, but Vita doesn’t —-> ring ring…. oh well…

Only a HIGH-TECH NERD, have them both, spending a total sum of 800,- plus monthly plan(if he or she have a 4G data package)…

And why a competition of the same brand?? it’s useless to come with that, both money will goes to the same company named “SONY”….

@1/3 You could at least try and think for a few seconds before posting some ill thought out rubbish. One, he’s a developer, not an analyst, two, he’s talking about sony launching two products that have a similiar target audience and could undermine their own platforms.

very logical point, but the problem is that ipads and smartphones don’t receive much AAA titles.
The problem i see with Vita is that sony didn’t created a title that can sell this device. There is no identity.

Nintendo for example can sell their Nintendo 3DS and etc because they have Mario and Pokemon. Thats very important.

@1,3 kid, please go to N4G. Your nonsence on VG247 is just pure rubbish.

@1/3 you do realise he is probably one of the most important software developers of all time.

@5, hopen’t the same crap that happens with PSP-GO, that nobody buys it or traded in 1 month later for PSP 3000, because they wasn’t aware of PSP-GO is Digital download only…. for those gamers that want to looks cool to have a PSP-GO but waste money, well it’s not my money…

Hopefully both devices gonna be successful, 1 device for a business man that want a smart-phone and some games on it on there break time, the other device is for hardcore gamer, that don’t wan’t to be disturb(if that device have a call-mode)… for him/her they can game on….

IT IS TRUE, I think it would’ve been better if SONY included phone capabilities in 3G NGP instead of releasing many devices.
