The Witcher 2 reviews start hitting, get rounded up
Geralt, our favorite medieval monstrosity-hunter, is back in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The game is out today on PC, and some of the first reviews are finally starting to appear.

According to Gamespot, it looks as though some discs of the game were unplayable due to the retail CD key, as the game couldn’t yet be activated online to be reviewed. This may be the case with some other sites as well, so we’ll add more review scores as they come in.
So far – it’s getting all 9′s and above from the folks who got some hands on time with it already, though.
- GameReactor – 9
- CD-Action – 9.5
- Gry-online - 9.2
- Bit-tech – 95/100
- NowGamer – 8.4
- GameReactor Sweden – 9
- GamesRadar – 10
- RPS – Good yet quriky
- Joystick (France) - 19/20
- CD-Action (Poland) - 9
- Pelit (Finland) - 93/100
- PC Format (UK) - 92/100
- PC Games (Germany) - 88/100
- GameStar (Germany) - 87/100
- PC Guru (Hungary) - 92/100
- Games Aktuelle (Germany) – 9
- Hrej.cz (Czech Republic) - 9
- Doupe.cz (Czech Republic) - 9
- Zing.cz (Czech Republic) - 9

It’s the best game i’ve ever played PERIOD. Great story, great sound, stunnig graphics (cryengine 3 an its Crysis 2 is a baby besides REDENGINE), great gameplay, great level of design and custumization (never seen a world so beautiful made)…..and it has something that few games have : diversity….

Wish i could spend my money on a new graphic card so i could play this game, as it is now, i can’t waste my money on that.
@1: Guess they’ll fix the poor optimization, as they did with Witcher 1.

Witcher 2 has poor game choices, when you pick the wrong one you die and the game loads the same scene…

@8: I wouldn’t risk it. Buddy of mine bought it and it … doesn’t work properly, he has a Radeon HD4XXX-Something and the only thing you see are his eyes and everything else is just a mish-mash of colours. So it doesn’t work properly.

Why isn’t VG247 reviewing games?

I’m playing it right now and holy damn… this game is fantastic.
I love it. The only thing that pisses me off is that dead bodies disappear after 10 seconds. I mean really… 10 freakin seconds.
Game is gorgeous. Can’t talk about the story because i’m only two hours in it.
@DarkElfa, because it is strictly a news site and it should be that way.

to sum everything: Witcher 2 is UNCHARTED 2 of RPG games
and as a PC player i’m so happy with this. Every UI and interface is PC only.
everything on max. I will make few screenshots soon just for fun.

@11 Because they write news, not reviews. They do the occasional article, but VG247 is more an industry blog than a games blog. They want to follow what’s happening rather than saying how good the end product is. I think that’s the reason I like the place so much, outside of a few cases their opinion doesn’t get in the way, it’s just the news.

@19
Is the combat system awful because you actually have to think before you start a fight, and then think during the fight instead of just button mashing?
The combat system takes a little to get use too, but when you have to combine weapons, spells and items to defeat groups of creature, thats all good in my book.

@24, No, I consider it awful because I just don’t like it, feels terribly outdated & clunky in comparison to every other action game-this is just my opinion, don’t bother arguing with me, we all have different tastes.
Don’t get me wrong, I think that nearly every other aspect is great, just one small frustration can have a large impact on the overall experiance.

@28: So your opinion is simply “I don’t like it.” Instead of “This is why i don’t like it:”

I think #19 is probably talking about the combat from the original, which kinda sucked hard.
Those screenies are nice erth, but I wouldn’t call them Crysis or Uncharted 2 from them.

Just a quick question for anyone out there: Just got a new Sandybridge mobo and an I5-2500K. Which new videocard should I get to run Witcher 2 at mid or max settings? Also, is this game DirectX 11 or 9? Thanks

@Hunam, it’s actually beautiful.
I’m making screenshots from FRAPS and we all know that with “fraps” program you won’t get the maximum juice out of the screenshots.
Trust me. It’s really beautiful and gorgeous. This game have more grass then PS3 will ever handle in it’s 10 year life cycle. Believe me

This is seriously one bad ass motherf***ing game! Not only is it graphically superb, the gameplay is sublime and it’s also a real challenge. This game will really punish you for making an error in combat, but even so “wow!” does it make you want to go back again and again to progress further into the game. It could definitely do with some more patching to optimize it a bit better, but other than that it is the best PC game I have played in a few years now.

For me the optimization is good, I can play the game with 4 yo parts. Intel Core Duo 1.86Ghz, 2GB Ram and GeForce 8600GT. And even not everything is set on low and have pretty stable framerate. Also some of the story are given with absurd comic book like style and they botched the funniest minigame Dice Poker. As for the game is pretty good, but not the second coming of Jesus. Also the game really look beautiful if you can run it properly, I think it is the new benchmark for PC gaming.

Damn you, Erthazus and your damn screenshots! *shakes fist at screen*
Playing through the first one with a 256mb 9400GT on medium settings is cumbersome enough; this would probably just give me a “Are you fucking serious?” screen on installation.
I bet it’ll be this vs Portal 2 vs Battlefield 3 vs Skyrim vs GuildWars2 for all the PC accolades at the end of the year. /CaptainObvious
