Square reports 35% drop in sales, blames “weak consoles performance”
Square Enix has released its financial information for its fiscal year ending March 31, and it finds sales down 35 percent for the year to ¥12 billion ($148 million/£90.6 million).

The firm blamed its financial year on “weak console performance,” as well as the delay in billing for Final Fantasy XIV Online due to being free to subscribers while the game’s kinks were worked out. The earthquake and tsunami were also a contributing factors, as well as companies the publisher purchased losing value over the year.
“Our Group experienced significantly lower sales and profit during the fiscal year mainly due to weak performance of console game titles released during the year as well as the impact of a continued delay in billing for a key online title, which was newly launched during the year,” said Square boss Yoichi Wada in the company statement.
However, it was not all doom and gloom as the Square noted Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days and Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 each sold one million copies for the firm.

@1 Exactly.
And blame FF13 (Even though I played from start to finish lol..)
EDIT: @2 Hell yeah, at least I hope so! If there’s ever a game that I DONT want to suck, it’s Deus Ex Rev.

They only have themselves to blame.

Hey, Square! Remember when you used to make colourful games that were full of wonder, fantastic scenarios, and entertainingly charismatic characters? Yeah? You did that right up to Final Fantasy IX, which was a bloody great little title.
Now, did you notice that you stopped doing that around FF X and went downhill from there? Well… that might be your problem!

#5 agree with you, but i did like FFX to tell you the truth, X-2 not so much and lets not even talk about XII and XIII, for me the X was the last great FF from them.

#9 with all due respect, i disagree with you nier was a great game i did like it a lot, the story the setting and the gameplay, the only thing that was ok were the graphics, but it did have a nice artistic direction.

That’s what you get when you rush out a MMO that’s only %50 percent complete and charge people for it. Plus their other games like Kane & Lynch 2 and FF13 were no gems either. Why K&L2 sold so many copies is beyond me. First one was really bad but at least ambitious. Second one was plain bad and had the shortest singleplayer campaign I’ve ever played this gen.

It would’ve been better to blame it on the earthquake instead because the Japanese game market is critical to any game sales worldwide. However due to the economical nature and philosophy of the Japanese people, they would naturally prioritize their expenses taking into consideration the economical crisis and the earthquake … just to refresh your memory, check the amount of economical loss caused by the earthquake.

@11 Please stop being stupid, FF-XIII did sell pretty well it’s a platinum !! and it’s a game for people with brains … no some fps of shoot and kill. and if XIV doesn’t satisfy you .. what’s the alternative ?!
I think Kane and Lynch 2 is an awesome game and more great ones under the guidance of S-E are coming soon:
DEUS-EX
HITMAN
TR Reboot
you should learn how to differentiate in genre when you compare games.

I think The 3rd Birthday, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Final Fantasy Type-0 will be the main incomes of Square Enix for FY 2012.

I blame Handhelds.
SQE has done a lot of remakes and reboots. And alot of other handheld games. Thats great for their home market. But doing that makes it hard to sell console games abroad.

FF13 was quite poor to be honest. It lacked almost anything that people wanted from the game and was so linear that everyone noticed it. K&L2 was just terrible. FF14 was an unmitigated disaster. Most of their strongest content has been on the PSP, which is very weak outside of Japan.

FF13 certainly brought a whole new meaning to the term “crushingly linear”. You literally couldn’t take more than 3 steps to your left or right at some points >_>. Talking about the start of the game.

if they actually got verses and type-0 out maybe they would see some profit, FF XIII was so very fail battle system wise.

what weak console are they talking about?
because I know that Xbox 360 is weaker than PS3.

The “weak console performance” means weak performance of console titles (against their expectations), not a specific console. I’m pretty sure SquareEnix Ltd isn’t falling into the red because the 360 uses DVD9.
Everyone has their own personal bete noire somewhere between FFX and FFXIII, when they think the core of Square jumped the shark, but the real problem is that their development cycle is broken. The timeframe involved to produce something even as linear as XIII is wildly out of proportion to the return it can make. If you can believe it, FF 8, 9, and 10 were split by one year intervals. Now we’re arrived at the point where Square claims it would take @12 years to remake FFVII.
They’re clearly not spending that inflated budget of time and money on things that improve the game in the eyes of their audience. Even their hardcore fans can’t appreciate all the touches, whatever they are; the vast mainstream where they turn a profit is totally indifferent or actually antipathetic to the expensive augmentations.

its their own fault. where are the cool games? shit like kane & lynch, mindjack (okay..its was okay..for the 6.50 € I paid). star ocean was nice..better than FF 13 (star ocean is still higher in amazon.com rank than ff13, on both consoles) and bringing a really buggy, sucky MMO out like ff14 is really terrible.
Ah..and then the level cap rise in FF11:
Player collected at least 2 years rare items to build their Relic Weapons for level 75. And then the level cap to 90…nice idea^^
Wtf is wrong with you? I cant identify my old (not-anymore) fave game dev/publisher.
