Brink reviews go live – get all the scores here

The verdicts on Splash Damage’s Brink are go. And they’re unlikely to be what you were expecting.

The Splash Damage shooter ships in the US today and releases in Europe this week. As ever, stick any scores you have in the comments and we’ll post them up for you.

Well glad I got it through Gamefly and I didn’t buy it.

I did think this looks a bit crap and now it’s been confirmed for me. I’ll give this one a miss.

Videogamer.com have gone with an 8/10.

1UP is the only one I trust, there, and they gave it a D. That tells me everything I need to know.

Eurogamer I’m not surprised about, they’ve been hyping it up for a while via previews and such, and I’m sure that Rock, Paper, Shotgun will do one of their apologetic Wot I Thinks about how ‘good’ this game is. Trying to pick out every little positive point and overinflate it. I say that because RPS has been doing nothing but hype it up too.

So yeah, I’m going to trust 1UP on this one.

One thing I’ll add that’s interesting is that Ars Technica is not reviewing it due to a slew of bugs.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/05/why-were-not-review-brink-and-why-you-shouldnt-buy-it-yet.ars

And amusingly enough, whilst the 1UP review duly covers these issues, the Eurogamer review doesn’t mention them at all.

Interesting.

Seems my loyalty isn’t misplaced. :P

@4 1UP is (at best) ill informed, and at worst complete garbage since they were bought by IGN. Most of the intelligent writers who actually knew what they were talking about have long since jumped ship for greener pastures.

Most of 1UP’s (and Joystiq and Kotaku and IGN’s for that matter) read like the author didn’t even play the game past the title screen. All their pros and cons come from 10 second impressions after reading the press release or watching youtube footage.

I’m not defending this game, I haven’t played it yet, but for crying out loud play the game and form your own opinion instead of swallowing whatever garbage the big media outlets are bullied into writing.

@6

THis is why there are reviews to be informed and to decide if this game is for the buyer or not. Can’t just go throw 60$ in the wind and hope the reviewer is wrong, yeah that seems real logical. Let me go spend 20$ on a Michael Bay film and hope its not full of exploisons and girls that are half plastic…. :)

Reviews all over the place again, I see. Will read a couple of these later on, but when this kind of thing happens it’s usually your friends’ recommendations that you want to turn to.

Am I imagining this or are most of those numbers coming in around the 80% mark. Is that bad these days?

Did you miss the memo? Anything below a 9 is absolutely confirmed as ‘unplayable shite’ these days. :-)

80% is very good but a lot of people are only interested in 90%+ as Blerk mentioned. It’s really very sad…

@21
You’d think reviewers would be a bit more careful these days now people can actually follow up on you with Achievements/Trophies.

The real longevity here you’d think would be in the MP side, and once again the reviews seem to concentrate on the SP a lot more. It is billed by the devs as a SP/MP hybrid – blurring the lines – so there is an argument for including the SP aspect as significant, but where is the justification for ignoring the MP side so much? Maybe it is more down to the Publishers to ensure there is a proper opportunity for reviewers to experience that side some more. The certainly don’t help themselves with review embargoes and sending out review copies so late in the day.

@18 – The games industry is pretty fortunate compared to the film industry for example, in that it has such a high percentage of great releases. A 9/10 has become such a standard score for decent games that 8′s and 8.5′s are seen as average, and anything below that is seen as mediocre/poor.

So really, the industry is just a victim of it’s own success. The bar is set so high that people simply expect to see 9′s from a game that’s worth playing.

Well let’s have a look. The only site I care about gave it an 8, but they were really pumped for it since the first hands on. But well, I guess I’ll see it tomorrow by myself, it got dispatched a few hours ago :)

A little disclaimer for the weak minded:

These reviews are based ONLY on the CONSOLE versions of Brink, which has been patched for online issues on the Xbox 360, while the PS3 reviewers had to play trough SP only for obvious reasons.

Review code for the PC version is getting released TODAY so you will have to wait at least some days to have a PC review of Brink. Better reviewers will want to play it for at least a week before writing about it.

As a final thing to nail straight, don’t forget this is the first attempt ever at console programming by Splash Damage, which is a PC born developer.

@#30: Someone forgetting about the mess called ET: Quake Wars? :D But yeah you’re right, it seems like these guys played the game just for a few minutes to finish their reviews in time.

read the ars review.
it tells enough why the scores are low.

So it seems that there seems to be a slight Atlantic divide on this with most of the Euro sites going with 8′s.

Most of the huge American mega sites seem to utterly hate it for whatever reason. Maybe Splash Damage should just call it a day on trying to make interesting games and just release an update of Wolfenstein Enemy Territory.

#36

M. K.
10/05/11, 10:34 am

Why should they? The game seems to be great, it just has some technical issues. Maybe they shouldn’t have rushed it :(

@32

Splash Damage didn’t develop the console versions. Nerve Software worked on the 360 version and Underground Development handled coding duties for the PS3 version.

Oh really? Good to know, I just hated the game on consoles :( But on Brink SD is making the ports for all versions right?

Indeed they are. But yeah, I also agree with you on the Quake: ET console hatred; both versions roundly sucked rectum.

@ M.K. and StolenGlory: Why don’t you do yourself a favor and buy the PC version? :D

@35 but Brink IS an updated version of the original ET, or at least a spiritual successor.

I have the striking feeling that the reviews are being made by people whose previous FPS experience is limited just to Call of Shyte 5 onward, which is a real shame.

#44

StolenGlory
10/05/11, 11:12 am

@NeoSquall

I currently still have the PC version on pre-order, but cancelled the 360 version pending this patch (and the likely price drop). My reasoning for getting two different SKU’s is similar to why I have preordered the 360 and PC SKU’s of Battlefield 3; I simply have two almost entirely different social circle of friends whom either have a 360 *or* a PC and I would like to play with them on both.

Don’t get me wrong though, i’m certainly far less apprehensive regarding the PC version.

Well, at the minute anyway :)

UuBuU
10/05/11, 11:13 am

@43 – If Brink is anywhere near as good as COD 5 was, i’m getting it.

But I agree that people shouldn’t read into the console reviews too much. As with all online FPS games, Brink should only be played on a PC. Console versions are always going to be significantly inferior, and reviews should reflect that.

`@ M.K. and StolenGlory: Why don’t you do yourself a favor and buy the PC version? `

I don’t know, maybe because I’m enjoying playing on consoles for years, and I do it so much, that I’m paying for it xD No seriously, I just don’t see a reason to go back to PC as my main plattform. Sure, the graphics are better and the controlls are often more precise, but as long as there are good ports for consoles which guarantee fun, I’ll stick with it ;)

PS: You don’t know how the PC version is going to be, maybe it’s even a bigger mess ;D) *flameon*

/e: PPS: I’m a huge CoD fan, but I’m also playing games like BF:BC, TF2 or MNC :)

Yeah, you could be right, which is why i’m very eager to see ANY review material on the PC version.

#48

NeoSquall
10/05/11, 11:26 am

@44 Can’t argue with that

@45 Problem is, CoD and Brink are very different games :facepalm:
CoD SP: heavy story driven and scripted game
CoD MP: heavy individualistic game, people don’t bother with teamwork and go for the points

Brink SP: mildly story driven game, relies on MP mechanics
Brink MP: heavy team based game, people are encouraged to do teamwork on main objectives and do class objectives to help the team
