Don’t expect Master Chief to make a cameo in Gears of War 3

Saturday, 30th April 2011 18:21 GMT By John Callaham

Halo’s iconic Master Chief character isn’t likely to make a multiplayer appearance in Gears of War 3, according to Epic Games’ main designer Cliff Bleszinski: Microsoft’s too “squeamish,” apparently.

In a new interview at the Complex web site, the developer said: “I’ll let you in on a secret. I actually approached Microsoft on getting Master Chief into the game, but those guys are kind of squeamish.”

While both the Gears of War and Halo franchises are “M” rated shooter titles, “One of Halo’s successes is that it’s a soft M,” Bleszinski added.

“Gears pushes it further. I’m creatively comfortable with that, though it can limit what you do. If you had to break it down, I’d say that Gears is like Mortal Kombat and Halo is like Street Fighter.”

However, assuming Epic Games ever did get the chance to put Master Chief in one of its Gears games, he’d be in for a rough ride.

“We’d get his model, put him in a COG suit, make it blow up, and do some test animation work. We’d have to see what his head looks like being blown to smithereens or how his arm would look getting sawed off. Then we’d package up the test footage, put it on YouTube, and let the fans get a kick out of it because everything is meta these days.”

Gears of War 3 is currently in the middle of its multiplayer beta test and is scheduled for release this September.

@3, they have, it’s just a casual Call Of Duty and console fanboy don’t know that.

@5 Don’t be harsh on him, English is his second language. He’s trying to say that Xbox fanboys associate Call of Duty characters as characters exclusive to the Xbox 360.

I don’t get why Unreal never gets any love anymore. I guess if it’s not on the Xbox then it’s not a game. Unreal was around WAY before Gears, and is still better, IMO.

Well, the single player Unreal games always sucked. UT1 was amazing, one of the best shooters ever made. UT2003 was also amazing, slicker if maybe a little too slick, but still an amazing game. UT2004 gayed it all up with vehicles and too many modes that just never got played, but the DM was still great but bombing run died online. UT3 was just terrible. Super bad almost. About a million different game modes which meant the PC version was almost pointless, seeing as only DM, TDM, CTF and Warfare got played. All the maps were gimmicky crap (something which ruined gears 2 also). Was basically a poor console title that was too PC to appeal to PS3 and too shit to appeal to PC.

@12 I was referring to UT, regular Unreal games were pretty terrible.

Well, Unreal 4 is no doubt due out next year or 2013 after the UE4 is finished.

@11, because they screwed UT3 and it bombed with sales and consoles were not good for it. I mean, in the age of Halo and Call Of Repetition what can you expect from average Joe?

Average Joe that know shit about the mechanics prefer Killzone 3 or Halo:Reach and call of dutEY ( average shooters at best)

also, it was pretty much unplayable not because something sucked at UT3, but without mouse and keyboard it’s impossible to play.

@14, Unreal 4 is not due next year (i’m not sure). But if it was true i would jump like an idiot.
UT is my favourite multiplayer shooter of all time.

UT 2004 is instant classic and masterpiece.

Ut was a twitch blast happy game aimed at average Joes, and one of the reasons tactical fps became extinct.

@15 IMO when you try to make a shooter for console only, it takes the soul out of the genre. PC shooters are the best. You just can’t beat a mouse and keyboard, again, IMO.

“Ut was a twitch blast happy game aimed at average Joes, and one of the reasons tactical fps became extinct”

    Bullshit.

Games like Unreal and Quake existed and lived with Tactical shooters always.

    “tactical fps became extinct.”

Games like ARMA 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series
with bunch of addons still exist just not on the casual platform of your choice and Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad, Tactical Intervention for 2011 with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in 2012 and i just described the best games in that category of this generation.
Counter-Strike is also in development at Valve.

Consoles and PC also share Operation Flashpoint series. + SOCOM’s and MAG. Maybe not the best one in their genre, but nice alternative.

Lolwut, those asinine trigger happy toys completely pummeled Tribes let alone Swat, Delta Force, R6, H&D. Valve ‘s CSS was the only one which survived the sad fate, partly because it also appealed to many average joes.

I was playing these games before you knew they exist, Erthazus. People kept getting carpal tunnel syndrome while drinking pepsi in all those internet cafes.

ArmA, what are the sales again? how many are playing it.

Ironically , Halo is one of the few remaining thinking man’s games. You should try the multiplayer sometimes, perhaps when you get the 360, Erthazus. I’d like to see your stats on bungie’s website.

Stalker, wtf are you on? reality check, we’re talking multiplayer.

Edit: so now Socom is a nice alternative? Just a few days ago you kept on how crap it is. Operation Flashpoint, how many are playing again? Besides, ArmA and Op Flashpoint aren’t the same games which i referred to, they ‘re more about being pseudo realistic and being tolerant then applying tactics.

DaMan what’s the online like for odst? I was thinking of picking it up cheap. Has it still got.a community, or they all playing Reach?

    #20 3 years ago
  21. DaMan

Odst only has the firefight (Horde in Gears), and without matchmaking added in Reach at that..

    #21 3 years ago
  22. Johnny Cullen

@20 ODST’s multiplayer is actually Halo 3. The second disc included with the game is for that segment. The only really new multiplayer bit in ODST is, as DaMan has pointed out, Firefight.

@19, “Lolwut, those asinine trigger happy toys completely pummeled Tribes let alone Swat, Delta Force, R6, H&D. Valve ‘s CSS was the only one which survived the sad fate, partly because it also appealed to many average joes.

Yeah there are people like fratboys that drink pepsi or beer but thats for every game out there.

“ArmA, what are the sales again? how many are playing it.”

Sales is not the quality or Call Of repetition is a masterpiece now?
ArmA is hard and not for everyone. This is a tactical shooter at it’s finest with awesome multiplayer component and editor. It’s hard and at the same time very complicated. Average Call Of duty or Halo player won’t play it because it’s not for their taste.

“Ironically , Halo is one of the few remaining thinking man’s games.”

In what reality? It’s a Quake|Unreal Rip Off just slower and without decent recoil. I played every Halo except for ODST and 3rd one and if Reach is the best one Halo to date it’s not a great game in my opinion. Just average. Average level design, multiplayer is very easy. Tactics are simple as hell. Run. Saw the enemy? Throw a grenade at him + shoot him = kill. Thats it. Thats basically it. Just remember to not forget about shileds and HP.
In games like UT or quake this thing does not work at all. Especially in UT where precision and your skils matter in terms of jumping (jumping on the walls) and if you are not fast enough you are dead. also, everything depends on what weapon your enemy is going to use. These games used for cybersport it’s a fact and they are used for it for a reason.

“Stalker, wtf are you on? reality check, we’re talking multiplayer.”

Yes. We are talking about the multiplayer and STALKER have multiplayer.

“so now Socom is a nice alternative?”

it’s with the same boat as Operation flashpoint games recently and MAG. I mean BAD ones, but it’s an alternative to shootfest games.

Average idiot playing Halo:Reach. So much strategy and skill involved.

First of, point being Q Arena /Ut were aimed at average joes, that’s what the pepsi/internet cafes reference was about.

Now ArmA as well as Op Flashpoint isn’t so much of a tactical game as it is a sim one. It’s appeal is in the pseudo realistic gameplay.

    http:// halo.wikia.com/wiki/Invasion

    http:// http://www.haloforever.com/xbox/halo-reach-maps-hemorrhage.php

I highly suggest you to take time and read through those pages, Erthazus.

Okay, off the top take Invasion.

you play as either the side defending the core or the ones attacking. First there’s the barriers which your team has to take out, or defend. then there’s the second stage. the generators. Say you have to enable the lift going upstairs on Spire or detonate the bomb on Breakpoint. Then the core. you have to take it to the evac zone / prevent it.

Have you seen any of the BTB maps in Halo? Valhalla, Hemorrhage? To say that it’s a slower Quake is like to state that ROTK is a turn based Warcraft. You won’t win running around, shooting people like in Quake. You’ll get splattered/sniped. At most you’ll have 4 kills at the end of the match and considerably more deaths.

there’s a ‘Living Dead’ gameplay type in Halo, doesn’t make it a Resident Evil or L4D. There’s a SWAT one, doesn’t mean it’s R6. There’s a Grifball (btw, community playlists, I’m wiling to bet you didn’t even know those exist in Halo), doesn’t make it a FIfa.

Halo started as a game a la Myth. It was a tps squad based game, the first person camera was later added. Team based gameplay, that’s where tactics come from. I’m not referring to it’s aiming or controls.

Teams. If there’s no team based gameplay, there’s no tactics. If you playa s a lone wolf, you’ll never see any, be it Halo or Delta Force. It will all be Quake to you.

Like I said numerous times before nothing in Halo is like Ut or any of the twitch blast happy shooters. The vehicles are straight out of Tribes. The open landscapes, rechargable shields. Motion sensors. The maps are of totally different purpose. To say that it ‘s a Q Arena rip off is like saying it’s a Doom clone because of the fist person camera and crosshair. Both Q Arena and Ut have everything different, apart from the first person view. Funnily enough, it wasn’t even until team Arena that the game got teams, vehicles were added to ut much later on, so if anything it was ut that looked at Halo and implemented driving vehicles too. But anyway.

Honestly, if you were less ignorant, you would actually compare Halo2 to Tribes to begin with, and point out that Halo2 was inferior. You don’t, because you haven’t heard about that one up until recently, and have a very shallow understanding of the game.

Halo Reach as well as even CoD are being used in cybersport, and that’s a fact I mentioned before.

I don’t believe you played any omp in Halo, unless you just ran around in FFA for a day or two.

Now, point being, I’m not trying to suggest that Halo is a great game, which you seem to miss. I’m just pointing out what it’s all about. Frankly, I don’t really believe something like ‘best ever made’ game or fps exists, since it’s based on taste.
