Sony Q3 results: PS3 sales rise to 47.9 million, close on 360
While both PS3 and PSP saw drops in hardware sales for the Holiday quarter, both systems enjoyed rises in the software sales for the period.

Sony Q3 financials
PS3 sold 6.3 million in Holiday quarter.
PSP sold 3.6 million.
PS3 software doubled year-on-year.
PlayStation 3 sold 6.3 million units in the three months ending December 31, down by 0.2 million units on the same time period from last year, although Sony has already met its sales projection for the year.
Total global PS3 sales now stand at 47.9 million. Xbox 360 has sold 50 million worldwide, as announced at CES.
PSP sold 3.6 million units in Q3, down year-on-year by by 0.6 million. PS2 sales were the same as they were at this time in 2010 at 2.1 million units.
Software, however, was well up, with 57.6 million PS3 games being sold in the quarter compared to 47.6 million in the likewise prior period.
PS3 closes in on 360
This slide shows PS3, PSP and PS2 hardware and software sales for this financial year so far. Global PS3 sales now stand at 47.9 million, compared to Xbox 360′s 50 million.
PSP software sales, too, rose sharply: 16.5 million units were sold for the hardware compared to 15 million in the same 2009 quarter. The rise was in contrast to the Q2 comparison this year, which saw PSP game sales fall from 13 million to 11 million.
PS2 software sales dropped massively, down from 11.2 million in 2009 to 5.3 million this year.
Sony’s Networked Products and Services division, which houses both the company’s PlayStation and VAIO business, has extended Q3 profit from ¥19.5 billion to ¥45.7 billion year-on-year, the firm said today.

Wow, 45 million, just to chuck some petrol over the trolls’ fire: Took the 360 about 5 years to sell that many while the PS3 has been out for a little over 4.
Now childishly debate over what’s the better console while i smirk @ the blind loyalty to faceless corporations >:D

Wait, the PS3 had sold 41.6mil by the end of September, adding those 3 months til the end of December (6.3mil) that’s a life time sales of PS3s around 46.9million.
Reckon next year the overall numbers will switch to Sony’s way? Considering how much more the PS3 costs than the 360, that’s a fairly surprising feat.

Regardless of cost, Sony can still rely on the Playstation brand. It’s not what it was in the PS2 days, but it’s still exceptionally strong.
That said, they’ve got to be a little disappointed that they didn’t manage to improve sales this year, especially seeing as Microsoft did. I think we’re probably due another batch of price cuts from all three of them.

Awesome! I make too many mistakes with this keyboard, if it doesn’t have a red underline & still makes sense, I won’t normally notice the mistake at first glance.

It’d be interesting/possibly amusing to see a breakdown of PSP software sales by region.
Also interesting to see that software sales were basically ‘even’ with 09, the big rise in PS3 software sales must’ve been almost equal to the drop in PS2 software sales. Does that suggest that they’re finally “converting” the remaining PS2 die-hards, I wonder?

I’ve added in the sales slide. There’s no break-down of PSP software by region in the presentation, but it may be in the full report. I’ll look in a sec.

Thing is, we read little bits like this one all of the time. PS3 gets closer then ever! This is the year of the PS3! Etc.
And yet MS had a killer xmass, much stronger then PS3. Kinect is beating move, badly. And on the software side of things it is just as bad, despite some very hyped(and often very good – LBP2, for example) exclusive PS3 games.
What I am saying is that while this is great flame bait for trolling fanboys, it really doesn’t change anything. PS3 is selling, great. But xb360 isn’t not going to sell. And may I remind you guys, all of this is for last place in a three man race. Wii is rediculiously ahead of them both.
So who cares who gets second? And it isn’t going to be by much either way. In the end, the only way PS3 opens up a large lead over xb360, is if MS switches to a new system and shuts down xb360. If they do that and Sony continue to support PS3 market then sure the gap could grow.
But it is all pointless at that point. To be honest, it is kind of pointless now too.

PS3 will never catch 360. sales are slowing cos there are much better and cheaper bluray players out now and its a really weak for games
sony finish last place guaranteed. where they belong.

@10 you have been smoking something to say PS3 will outsell wii in 2011,PS3 is about 36.73M behind Wii, yeah I don’t know if you saw but Nitnendo said they shipped 84.63M end of 2010!, and by end of this year they will have done about 97M compared to about 60M PS3. THey iwll have out shipped 360 then so you might have something to gloat about.

I think back_up meant the sales of 2011 and not overall the sales.
Besides, I see as evident that PS3 will go a bit past the 60 million mark with at least 15 million and probably more. Wii will go down in sales signaficantly as has done in the past year and I think both 360 and PS3 will outsell for the year of 2011.
Overall it will be several years before the Wii will be overtaken in sales, if ever. However, when the last Wii, 360 and PS3 has been sold, I believe the PS3 will come out on top. Whether thats by 1 or many millions remains to be seen.

That headline isn’t quite correct. As of the last set of shipment figures the PS3 was 2.9m behind (44.5m vs 41.6m), now it’s 3.0m behind (50.9m vs 47.9m).

Actually… looking at it more closely, the shipments are identical for the the last quarter (6.3 vs 6.3). I can only assume the difference is down to rounding somewhere along the line (either MS or Sony rounding one way or another).
