Nintendo wheels out 3DS prototypes

Nintendo’s shown off in a new Iwata Asks earlier prototypes of what 3DS used to look like before its E3 reveal last June.
The first model shown was basically known as the “minimum model”, according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.
The second SKU showed off a model not too similar to DS Lite, where things such as the D-Pad and analogue slider could be swapped about.
Iwata also talks about the troubles of getting working hardware on display to attendees at E3 last year alongside hardware designer Kenichi Sugino, system designer Ryuji Umezu and project producer Hideki Konno.
There’s a lot more on it through here.
3DS launches on February 26 in Japan, March 25 in Europe and March 27 in the US.

@2 – Yeah, because that really mattered with DS and PSP…
The real test that new generation handhelds face is the competition from smartphones. 3DS and NGP will be successful but doubt either will be as runaway a success as DS in the current generation.

@2. NGP is dead on arrival, just like PSP. For every 1 NGP sold Nintendo will sell 5 3DS systems.

PSP, the “dead on arrival” handheld that constantly tops the hardware charts in Japan and is in more homes worldwide than either the PS3 of 360.
Yup, what a flop of a handheld.

@4 exactly!
Sony ps3bots will never get this to their thick skulls!
Preorders topping Wii sales while NGP is still in prototype! Instant fail for Sony!
