Analyst: app download rate to overtake music, software

Tuesday, 18th January 2011 01:25 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Industry analyst Asymco estimates that app download rates are not only accelerating, but set to overtake other markets.

Asymco predicts that the rapidly accelerating rate of app downloads will soon be greater than that of music, and eventually overtake PC software sales.

App downloads reached 10 billion in less than half the time of music downloads, suggesting the total number of apps downloaded to date will shortly pass that of iTunes music purchases to date.

By Asymco’s reckoning, over 60 apps have been downloaded for every iDevice sold, up from ten just two years ago.

Thanks, D’toid.

Music? Perhaps. But software? Keep dreaming, Apple.

‘Software’ is by far too wide an umrella for a focused market like the iDevices to compete with, especially when on PC download sites there tend to be millions of downloads per second. (Please note that Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X all run on PC hardware.)

A lot of that has to do with the whole aspect of so much software being free, which to my knowledge, no apps really are (only demo versions thereof).
