Xbox 360 turns five in Europe

360 wave

Party hats on again, chaps.

Today marks the fifth anniversary of Xbox 360 going on sale in Europe and the UK: the console went on sale on December 2, 2005.

It only celebrated its US launch last week, with Japan celebrating – or maybe not – its release next Friday, December 10.

The console, which was unveiled in an MTV special before E3 in 2005, launched in 20Gb and a HD-less Arcade SKU forms. It was Microsoft’s second home console following the launch of the original Xbox in March 2002 in Europe.

Launch titles for 360 in Europe included two Rare titles in Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo as well as Call of Duty 2, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Project Gotham Racing 3 and Ridge Racer 6, to name a few.

In the subsequent years, it’s seen three Halo titles including Halo 3 itself. The latest release, Reach, launched in September.

360′s biggest new IP, however, has been Gears of War. Following launches in 2006 and 2008 of Gears 1 and 2 repsectively, the final game in the main series will release next fall.

In November, Microsoft launched motion camera Kinect, something that the company hopes will significantly extend the life-cycle of the console.

Red-rings? What red-rings? We bow to you, 360. Happy birthday.

My 360 has become such a significant part of my life I dont know what I’d do without one!

It’s a fantastic console, and for me very easily the best thing to ever hit the gaming scene.

It has lead the HD charge, changed the way we game, changed our social interactions and driven the downloadable and indie game scenes on consoles.

Here’s to a few more years at least. There’s still plenty to come from the 360 but I’m very excited about what MS will bring to market next.

@4 I’d rather say the x360 is the worst thing to ever hit the gaming scene:

- Highest failrate ever
- Paying subscription needed for p2p-gaming, demo’s, free online services (Facebook) and even 3rd party discounts
- Lack of new ip’s and innovation in exclusives
- Introduction of platform-exclusive content for multiplatform games
- You need to pay for free DLC
- Ridiculous prices for Wifi-kit, HDD etc…
- 1200 points map packs
- …

All good things on the x360 (HD-resolution, DLC, voice chat, indies…) were already available on the pc. Only thing added on the x360 is the extra cost.

Half of the things you list there are products of this generation rather than the 360 itself, Ge0force.

Anyway, initially I wasn’t sure about buying Microsoft after the failure reports and my history being with Sony machines, but now… I love it and don’t regret buying it for a second. So there. Screw you guys! :-D

I don’t give a fuck what flag you fly, i’ll go *wherever* the good games are.

And for the record, the 360 has had more than it’s fair share of those since it launched.

XBLA has pretty much singlehandedly made this gen awesome for me. Exactly what I want from gaming these days. \o/

@Ge0force:

I don’t get why the x360 is “the worst thing to ever hit the gaming scene“:

- “Highest failrate ever
Agreed, the fail rate was ridiculous, but MS paid their dues with the 3 year warranty scheme and has fixed things through hardware revisions.

- “Paying subscription needed for p2p-gaming, demo’s, free online services (Facebook) and even 3rd party discounts
All users get access to demos eventually and, frankly, no one is forcing you to pay up, if you don’t want to. There’s always a thing called choice.

- “Lack of new ip’s and innovation in exclusives
There could (and should) be a huge amount of improvement in that area, that’s for sure. On the other hand, x360 architecture has helped 3rd party developers (through familiarity) to build things easier/quicker/better in the early stages.

- “Introduction of platform-exclusive content for multiplatform games
Platform exclusiveness is not something the x360 introduced in the gaming world.

- “You need to pay for free DLC
That can be a publisher’s decision, as well… and before someone mentions Valve content (which is free on the PC but, shamefully, costs money on the x360), there have, also, been examples of free contents across all platforms (Burnout Paradise, anyone?).

- “Ridiculous prices for Wifi-kit, HDD etc…
Like I already said, you can always vote with your wallets…

- “1200 points map packs
So the x360 is to blame for publisher’s greed?

@10, “XBLA has pretty much singlehandedly made this gen awesome for me. Exactly what I want from gaming these days. \o/”

That statement is full of BS. No wonder some guys saying that Halo is a great game and shooter that did something new.

Steam was before that and did the same… Even better and still is better.
XBLA did nothing new this generation. There is absolutely nothing new, except that you are paying for what is supposed to be free.

Well, if someone is a tool then it’s his choice.

Xbox 360 did nothing good this generation. Absolutely nothing.
The only thing that it did right is by entering this competition with full force made Sony work their ass harder, but at the same time Microsoft completely forgot about PC market.

Highest failure rates
Ridiculous subscription models (sony started this later) for demos and everything else that supposed to be free like in Steam. Fratboys that pays Call Of duty every night still paying for it. Well, tools choice.
Old and shitty 7 year old hardware that stopped a revolution in physics, graphics.
In most cases MS 1st party lacks a lot with their childish Halos, casual RPG games like Fable. The only game that is fucking awesome from 3rd party is Gears Of War 2-3 that were supposed to be on PC. But they are not, because money is money and Cliffy is a douchebag as always.

For me 360 did everything wrong this generation and it’s not only for me.

“XBL was started in 2002 and Steam in 2003

DUMB ASS. There was no need in this service when everybody had the best lan and internet support on the PC

XBL that started in Xbox had basic Microsoft Windows 2000 internet functions.

“Stop crying i just proved your statement “”Steam was before that and did the same…”” wrong DUMB ASS”

If you really don’t know. STEAM actually started before and was an upgrade system for Counter-Strike/Half-Life at that time.

Initially as a service it started in 2003. XBL started in 2002 with the same basic options that STEAM and other companies did before idiot.

Get the fuck out and enjoy your Playstation 3 for god sake.

@Blerk,
“Xbox 360 makes you very cross doesn’t it, Erthazus.”

It’s making me sick sometimes when little fratboys pray for this brand when it done everything wrong in reality.

The only thing that it did right is to make Sony look like shit (at least for one time) and they started work their asses + competition.
+ without MS Sony could use Toshiba shitty videocard.

but i can’t remember something that MS did right for it’s consumers for gaming. Just can’t.

Oh… Next generation of gaming is Kinect. I think Next-Next generation will be movies with this EVOLUTION of gaming.

I agree w/PT.

In my mind the best thing that came out of this gen thus far is XBLA. Plan and simple. So many hours of gaming with Arcade games. Not to mention RockBand and its stream of DLC.

Sure the xb360 struggled early. Then again I could have bought two xb360s for what I paid for my launch PS3. Point being I haven’t seen a flawless strategy from anyone this gen. ‘Cept maybe the DS.

Game on MS, I will be preordering whatever system you do next.

@JonFE, “Thank goodness for that memory refreshment… At least, that apology is a step in the right direction; hopefully, it won’t be the last.”

It’s not the service that is good. It’s GAMES that are good.

but Sony, Ninty, MS and STEAM on PC all have it.

@Gadzooks, just shut up, for sake. I’m not speaking with fanboys.

I wonder about Graphics too. Maybe it is silly to think about, but where do we go from here? These games look pretty nice. I guess the next step could fix framerates, ripping, AA, or a few other things. But most of those things are, in my mind, results of poor programing and not so much a fault of the hardware.

I am just worried that bigger, beefier systems will result in longer dev cycles and higher priced games :/

#33

It won’t result in longer dev cycles.

Just teams will be bigger and more money publishers will spend and thats it. It was always like that.

@JonFE, it was REVEALED to the public.

@32 i think 1080p/60fps must be the standard requirement next gen. the basic performance template. i know RAGE is meant to have this but i’d like to play the finished product to see if its true, on consoles.

launch games will probably be £49.99 – £54.99 imo. if some of them are of a real high quality across the board then i’ll probably wont complain too much ;-)

#37

Psychotext
02/12/10, 12:57 pm

I don’t think 60fps will ever be mandated. Whoever does it will lose the screenshot wars in a big way. They’ll always want 30fps for max shiny.

Eventualy it is all going to be streamed via cloudlike someday. But that is a long ways off. I figure we one solid generation yet to go. We might see something mainstream cloudlike toward the end of next gen, maybe.

Till then we have Onlive/Giaka(sp?).

The Onlive Microconsole for the living room is shipping this month. But I doubt something like that will start some sort of wildfire. Just not enough folks out there with enough ISP speed to make it worth it for them. Then again last gen the samething was said about Broadband online gaming. Remember Sony laughing at Segas Dreamcast for pushing online games? Then along comes Xboxone and it was on.

So who knows.

#45

daytripper
02/12/10, 1:34 pm

i think everyone has a console/gaming machine preference. things like controllers, how the interface works and what games are on the system plus online now plays a factor too.

i understand what you are saying but when i think of a fanboy i think of someone without logic who is unwilling to accept any fault in the machine or franchise or whatever they arse lick – thats a fanboy to me. i prefer the xbox 360 to the others like i enjoyed gaming on the snes more than the megadrive/the ps1 to n64/the ps2 to xbox/gc/dc having owned them all but its not without its flaws, as the others do also.

i just dont see the justifaction in being a prick to someone (not you btw) if they have a different preference, there is no need at all, its just video games.

@Michael O’Connor: you are very right. But I don’t feel like supporting a platform where you need to pay for services that are free on any other platform. I also hate the fact that Microsoft only buys existing popular stuff instead of investing in new game franchises. The PS3 launched a lot of great new ip’s this generation (LBP, Heavy Rain, Demon’s Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Infamous…), I don’t see that on the 360.

@47 Team chat was already popular on pc since the 90′s. Chatting with people playing other games is useless and totally ruins the gaming experience. It’s like talking on the phone while watching a show on tv. Party chat is only usefull for achievement hunters for boosting or when they are bored collecting 500 feathers, which has nothing to do with gaming anymore.

Alan Wake, Blue Dragon, Crackdown, Gears of War, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect? Wikipedia has a great big list, that’s just a few.

I don’t think they’ve done enough on that front btw, they could’ve done much more. Sony’s put much more time, effort and money into its own stuff whereas Microsoft appear to have been busy shutting theirs down. It’d be nice to get a bit more of it and a bit more variety into the mix next gen.
