Third developer diary for Enslaved talks about the environment

Saturday, 18th September 2010 22:15 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Ninja Theory has put out another developer diary for Enslaved, it’s called Visualizing the Terrain, and in it the developers chat about the game’s world and the different environments Trip and Monkey will find themselves in.

The timeline and how nature has reclaimed the world, post-post apocalypse is discussed as well.

Yes. Two “posts” there.

When Trip and Monkey start out in New York City and head west, the landscape and the remnants of massive Mechs will just get more extravagant and kind of fantastical as they go along.

It’s definitely going to be lovely to look at, that’s for sure.

Watch it below.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West will land in stores October 5 in the US and October 8 in Europe.

There’s a demo for it now on the European end of PSN, and the US gets the demo next Tuesday, September 21.

XBL will get the demo “soon”.

Thanks, Machinima.

I liked the art and design and the cutscenes were lovely but if the rest of the game is like the demo then it’s a no sale for me.

Problem is the game feels completely on rails. You cant fail on jumps and there is only one tightly scripted route. I felt a bit surplus to requirement when playing it.

The problem is they could open up the platforming, but without those glowing jump-to points you wouldnt be able to tell where to go as some of the climbing area design is a bit of a mess.

The combat was okay though, it flowed quite well.

In general the engine just didnt perform well enough for me. Every element of the game is jerky. Animation is stilted and framerates are poor, apart from in cutscenes.

I did like the lighting though.

Will be interested to see how the 360 demo performs. Unreal engine 3 usually performs better on the 360, and if it does then I might be tempted, otherwise no.

I think it was a poor demo in terms of content. I presume there are more open and free environments – but nothing in the demo indicated that. I also had big problems with the camera and would like to see how that performs in a more free environment.

Yeah, I get why they’d want to demo the opening but the trailer shown at the end actually looked like it might be interesting in terms of gameplay. Including more of a vertical slice of the game ‘proper’ would’ve been nice, even if they stripped out all the story elements.
