Valve to plan another L4D2-like quick sequel “at some point,” says Gabe

Valve boss Gabe Newell has told PC Gamer the firm will likely release another quick sequel to one of its games – a la Left 4 Dead 2 – “at some point”.

“I’m sure at some point we’re going to do it again,” said the developer boss.

“The point is we learned something about that, which is… your point earlier was that we surprise our customers, and there’s a certain amount of entertainment value in that.”

He added: “But then there’s also a certain amount of fear value in that, because the traditional surprise in the gaming industry is not ‘Oh, I’m surprised: something good happened!’

“The traditional surprise is ‘Oh, I’m surprised: X-Fire just got bought again and went away.’ ‘Oh, I’m surprised because something horrible has happened to a franchise that I’ve been following since I was a little kid.’”

Following the release of the original Left 4 Dead in 2008 for Xbox 360 and PC, Valve surprised everyone at E3 last year by announcing L4D2 in Microsoft’s press conference for a release last November, barely eight months since L4D1 launched.

Portal 3 late next year, then?

Doesn’t matter, it’ll be (more than likely) a great game, whatever it may be. Valve rarely put out a shite game/sequel.

I only understand: “bla bla, we’re just lookin’ forward to make some fast money with our outdated crappy cs engine”

@5

Are you for real? Their engine still looks fantastic, well, on PC anyway.

Do want L4D3. Maybe starring Midnight Riders. I hope this time they release it on PS3, cause as it stands now L4D2 is the only reason I still play on PC.

Too bad right now it’s full of cheaters and griefers.

@6 It’s not so good, really. With shaders set on high or very high it looks nice, but it is indeed outdated.

No one really cares anymore.

I couldn’t play Valve games on any format other than PC. The console versions of L4D 1/2 and Team Fortress 2 lag like a bastard. They’re unplayable, plus playing such games with a fucking 360/PS3 controller sends shivers down my back.

@7

I don’t think so, the engine has been recently updated on PC as evident in HL 2, EP1/2, etc. Putting the game at full setting i.e. Full HDR, 16x AA, 16x AF, etc is nothing short of stunning, especially at 1900×1200.

Outdated? Nonsense!

@9 But on console you’ll never encounter shitheads using aimbot or wallhack, and since aiming is harder infected have advantage in versus, which is very good.

@10

If you want to play Valve games, you play them on PC. Period.

Unless you don’t want to, of course.

@12

In that case you’re stuck with half arsed ports…

I’ve very much enjoyed several of those half-arsed ports.

Can’t believe Valve still got some respect from the people who should know better.

When was the last HL Episode released?

They changed, realize that. It’s only $$$$ now, and nothing more.

@11 It’s just your personal opinion. I for example don’t like PC gaming and prefer PS3 as long as PS3 version is available. But that’s also nothing more than my personal preference.
As for bad ports – that’s Valve’s problem really. And now they are on a mission with their PS3 games, let’s say they have much to atone for.

Whilst Source engine doesn’t look as great as other engines these days, on it runs well on most PC setups, which is the more important factor in PC gaming now.

@18

Great point.

With more and more people buying laptops then full blown desk tops, the race for the highest end graphic specs have slowed a bit. It is now more important to be able to reach as many users as possible.

I wish that more devs/pubs would figure this out.

Well, just look at who sells the most PC games these days, Valve and Blizzard, all of their products are aimed at mid spec PC’s at the top end rather than as the entery level. As long as the art is good enough and they use effects nicely to cover up the intentional short comings people wont notice/care.

Another Orange Box please, Gabe.

The Orange Box 1 + Episode Three, Half-Life 3, Counter-Strike, Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 1+2.

It’ll most likely never happen, but if all of the above were to happen, that really would be the best gaming deal ever.

I want this from Valve…
1) Half-Life Episode 3 out within the next 6months – 1yr and no later
2) Half-Life Episode 3 out within the next 6 months – 1yr and no later
3) Half-Life Episode 3 out within the next 6 months – 1yr and no later
4) Left 4 Dead 3 on PS3 with Collector’s Edition Pre-Orders getting part 1 and 2 with it.
5) Another Orange box of sorts with a good collection.
