Iwata: 3DS will appeal to “serious gamers”

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told Japanese news service Nikkei that the company plan to work closely with developers to “expand into elaborate games targeting serious gamers.”
In the interview, Iwata said Nintendo has already been working with developers when building the just-announced machine, something he believes is “good for both Nintendo and the software developers.”
Iwata did suggest that most of the software of the current DS caters more for non-game players, and he believes that advances in graphics and gameplay on the new handheld will help rectify this.
3DS titles already announced include Metal Gear Solid 3D and a brand new Resident Evil game.

Nintendo go for the casuals and win big. Sony & MS decide to change direction only for Nintendo to start chasing the hardcore again!

It’ll be interesting to see if they actually manage to sell any of those games, though. On past form, the types of people who usually buy that kind of stuff say that they want it on a handheld and then don’t actually go and buy it.

Its true, Nintendos ‘core’ consists of re releasing old games, either being direct ports (see 3DS games) or just putting them in 3D but still pretty much being the same old games (see nearly everything Nintendo showed at E3 for the SNES-Euh, i mean Wii).

“Serious” is right. Priced any higher then $199.99 and it will be a pass for me. It is looking like it will priced at $249-299 US, so no way. If it stays at that price then I will wait till they have a Cool Game packed in with the system.
I used to be an early adopter, but no more, not until US Currency is worth more the .50 cents on the dollar. But the rest of you early adopters, Buy in mass that way they make TONS of money and then make newer version with cheaper components and they can then lower the price.

I reckon Nintendo will be able to sell as many as they can make for the first year or so. Regardless of the price.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars comes to mind. Awesome game, sold peanuts.

Really anticipating this little machine, and as awesome as it is to play Zelda: OOT, i rather have a complete new Zelda adventure. Same as MGS3, i played and finished that one twice, i’ll probably still buy it cause its that awesome. But i hope eventually we’ll get complete new games too.

@9 The other GTA games did amazingly well on PSP.
I think the top down view did for Chinatown wars.

well for their own sake let it be true. I had my DSi for like 2 months and despite that I loved flipnote and new supermrio bros, I had no other thing do with it so I sold it.

I am looking forward to the 3DS and I would consider myself to be a serious gamer even though at the moment its generally ports with MGS 3, KH and Zelda:OoT, right now. It has a lot of potential.

I already have so many consoles and handhelds including an NDS for each of my kids no matter what the cost is I see little reason to buy another one. If anything it seems my kids will be moving towards iPhones as they are growing up and are not going to carry a both a handheld just for gaming and a phone that can play games. 3D is not even a factor at this point. Perhaps our minds will change if the price hits under $145.00 but until then…pass.

can anyone confirm if this actually exceeds the processing power of the psp, not sure wether it will be because i haven’t properly seen any videos off of it due 2 the fact it’ll look awkward being having a 3d display being displayed in 2d
