Bleszinski steps up press assault, calls foul on Japan tech story

cliffyb

Update: Looks as though Cliff was misquoted. Hit this for Future’s apology.

Original: Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski has claimed a CVG story constructed around Xbox World 360 quotes is “fabrication,” branding the piece “internet tabloid,” the second time in less than two weeks the developer has publicly hit out at a games site.

CVG said the developer had told the UK mag that, “technically, Japan just can’t keep up with the US.”

Bleszinski appears to be claiming Xbox World 360 magazine has completely misquoted him.

He tweeted:

Internet tabloid alert: I said *nothing* about Japan not being able to keep up with the US regarding tech. #fabrication

Bleszinski then added:

There are plenty of existing and upcoming Japanese titles that look amazing. I have nothing but the utmost respect for those devs.

If this “journalism” continues devs will only be able to recite fact sheets verbatim.

Websites intentionally publish misquotes and out of context pullquotes to create forum flamewars which generates traffic and profit.

Here’s another technique: you can say *anything* as long as you put a ? after it. ;)

This is the second time in the last two weeks Bleszinski has aimed accusations at the press, claiming a comment made in an interview about the “hideous” children in Heavy Rain was a “joke” after VG247 contributor Joe Anderson focused on the snippet.

VG247, directly linked from Bleszinski’s Twitter page by the man himself, was, again, branded “tabloid”. Bleszinski also used the word “press” in inverted commas, apparently in relation to VG247′s output.

Bleszinski and the rest of the Epic chaps will be showing off Gears 3 and Bulletstorm at E3 next week. Best make sure you back up those recordings, “press” types.

Thanks, Destructoid.

I see red when people put journalism in inverted commas.

So, first bash japanese games industry then pretend He said nothing and accuse the press of misquoting him? An admirable example of coherence indeed…
Seriously, those american developers should stop trash-talking about who is the best and who is not; they are ridicolous; do they maybe want the industry to conform to their production standards and call the rest “a bullshit”?!
And why developers who became famous for three or four valuable games think to have arguments to utter that they are undoubtely far ahead of anybody producing and publishing videogames in Japan?
After the Bioware people, I have to add even this Bleszinsky on top om my “offensive shit-talkers” list…

Fucking child, grow up. You can’t say as the developer of a massive first party Xbox 360 franchise that Heavy Rain, a highly promoted PS3 first party game has ugly kids without the games press picking up on it.

If you expect otherwise, you should go back to school. YEAH BABY!

There’s an element of truth in complaining about hit-whoring and headline-bending, but the more insidious element (to me anyway) is that ‘celebrity’ developers (seeing as we’re throwing around the quotation marks) increasingly expect to have things entirely their own way, and shite the bed about anything other than the most cap-doffing, vanilla reporting. Aside: I received an email over Christmas from a high ranking flak complaining that quotes from an interview we’d run were being twisted and misused to generate sensational headlines online. “Something needs to be done about the internet” I was told. Good luck with that, King Canute.

Games reporting is a bit tabloidy. But what isn’t these days? Did Cliff only just notice? :-D

Did he actually mention what he did say?

Well, VG247 certainly is a tabloid. The hideous children-post is a good example of that. It’s not news, it’s just some stupid quote blown out of proportion to get hits. If you don’t like being branded a tabloid, stop acting like one so often.

Love VG247, but I can’t do anything but agree with Old MacDonald. I come here for news, not flame wars. Respect to Bleszinski för his comments on the matter. He definitly has a point.

This.

Nevertheless it’s fun reading tabloid stuff from time to time. ;)

I just wish VG247 would stop splitting topics from self-published(!) interviews into multiple separate news posts for the sole purpose of getting more hits.

Other than that, keep up the great work!

He needs to properly get a refund from his media training agency.

The months leading up to Gears 2′s release were insane, i can understand if it was actually related to the game but most of the ‘news’ was just casual quotes from Bleszinski about any old crap.

I dont know why but it seems as if the gaming media WANTS to be “tabloid” when its about old CliffyB.

I’ve mailed Epic inviting Cliff to write an editorial for VG247 on what he feels are the problems with the gaming press at the moment.

That’d be amusing. Even more so if he joins in the comments banter afterwards. :-D

Patrick: Now that is good journalism. An other option would be to inverview him on the matter, since he might not have the time to write an editorial.

VG247 *is* been tabloid on many occasions. Not all the time, but more than it should be. You would have to be crazy to deny it.

There have been many, many news stories posted on here since the sites inception that have intentionally inflammatory titles that are controversial for the sake of being controversial, that take many comments out of context for the sake of an attention grabbing headline.

If that’s not tabloiding, I don’t know what is. The site’s news isn’t always like that, but it’s more common than it needs to be. As one person called it above, “hit-whoring and headline-bending”

Bleszinski is right in that regard, and about internet journalism in general. Most PR and developers play it so guarded and close to the chest for this reason alone.

“I just wish VG247 would stop splitting topics from self-published(!) interviews into multiple separate news posts for the sole purpose of getting more hits.”

/Picard

Watch the news at 10, or at 9pm or whatever news station you watch. Or even read a newspaper once in a while.

Both sets of media will lead with a headline based on an exclusive interview. “So-and-so sat down exclusively with BBC News and told us that Margaret Thatcher was a whore.” Then you’ll get the snippet of her saying it, then they’ll say “for the full interview visit our website.”

Conversely, a newspaper’s leading story will be a similar quote and at the end of the article they’ll say, “full interview with Batman and Robin on page 9.”

It’s such a standard practice, and always has been a standard practice since the dawn of time, that insinuating VG247 is somehow insidiously doing it to generate more traffic well yeah, of course they fucking are.

It’s not new. Pat didn’t make it up. Murdoch didn’t make it up. It’s what the news industry is all about. It’s the reason ‘why’ you get people in for exclusive interviews.

@18 You play video games, one of the most childishly violent mediums around today, and Cliffy is chidlish simply because the *media* is obsessed with using those photos? Okay then.

VG247 is one of the more restrained games websites and doesnt veer into flamebait territory too often.

Compare VG247 to Eurogamer. EG is a full on retard factory. There isnt a single shred of journalistic integrity left there. Pretty much every article is deliberately out-of-context or just plain out to incite forum flamewars.

I believe EG has fallen even below the brown stinky depths of GAF.
