God of War III is “fluff,” says Cave Story developer

God of War III is epic. No doubt about that. But it’s “fluff” too, according to the developer of WiiWare title Cave Story.

Tyrone Rodriguez, speaking in an interview with GoNintendo, said on the state of triple A games: “If you’re talking disc games, we’re going to see more big budget games with less gameplay and more fluff — think God of War III.

“We’re also going to see a lot more free-to-play with in-game transactions. It’s like the middle-ground for games is going away – it’s either really expensive or really quick and cheap.”

God of War III released last week for PlayStation 3. Get the first 15 minutes here. Cave Story, meanwhile, is out now on WiiWare.

Man has a point, a lot of big budget games are fluff these days but hey thats why smaller devs have a chance to grab gamers who want someone else.

If it helps get rid of the middle-ground “trashware” then I think that can only be a positive…

The Wii shelves at a retailer are a very peculiar place to find yourself… Unless you are well informed you can make some scary decisions…

Yeah, because ‘Cave Story’ doesn’t sound ‘fluffy’ at all.

Surely all video games are just ‘fluff’ – or whatever semi-meaningless buzz-word you care to use.

Although a lot of people might disagree or take offence at what he said, don’t discount Cave Story because of it. It’s a great game!

    First 45 mins epic?

I agree with him. The gap between high profile, big budget and lower cost, average game is growing.

Most fo what we get today are either sequels or new IP from proven and established industry vets. Games cost so much to make, who is going to put their money and risk it behind anyone else.

So, whatever your fav game is right now … rest asured, you will be playing it(or some version of it) in ten years from now.

I agree with Kerplunk all video games are fluff at the end of the day, it just depends how much fun you get from that fluff.

@OlderGamer Cave story is not exactly a new IP, besides that if a game is good no matter what the budget it will sell.

Played it in 2005, it’s a freeware pc game. Not even remotely in the top 10 platformers list. I guess he figures wiitards will buy more copies if he slams GoW and look like an idiot while doin so. Carry on!

    Pretty fluff is still fluff.

Couldn’t disagree more with Mr Rodriguez. The God of War series as an entirety is pretty much the exact opposite of fluff. The game’s relentless pace, incredibly tight structure and single-minded focus on the core gameplay mechanics (square/square/triangle!) really make GOW stand out among all the sprawling, messy and inherently fluffy AAA juggernauts like GTAIV, FFXIII and (depending on your definition of “fluff) Heavy Rain.

I wasn’t expecting much from this game, I never played the last two, but it blew my frigging balls off. Fooking Awesome!

Just finished the game, took about 12 hours, though I took my time and looked at all the GORGEOUS scenes. Yes this is a Popcorn Flick, or as they say a Fluff Game, but sometimes you just want to kick back spread your legs and get fluffed!! The game fluff’s the HELL out of you…It truly is an Epic Game.
The Ending…Mmmmm Kind of Sucked…I see now Why they were working on a different ending…I think they should have went with that one…Epic all the way through, until the end, and then the Fluffing runs out of spit…But Oh well you blow your Wad at the beginning and sit back and bask in the glory of that oh so good feeling..Wait what was I talking about again??? OH GOW 3…ROFL
