No install for GoW III, says Sony Santa Monica

godofwariiia6

Sony Santa Monica’s head of technology Christer Ericson has said God of War III won’t require an HDD install.

That’s despite news that the game will fill up to over 35Gb on a Blu-ray, with just over 40Gb for the European version thanks to localisation.

He tweeted:

God of War 3 does NOT do a HD install. The 5MB listed on box back is for save game only.

GoW III is due out on March 16 in the US, with an as yet unconfirmed date of March 19 in the UK.

A 5mb install wouldn’t have been worth much, would it? :-D

Sony showing how it’s done again – take note third parties.

I’d like it if they had optional installs tbh, if you have the space why not put it to use?

Yes, optional is always best. It’s always nice to know that if you’re playing seriously you can whack the whole thing on there for speed, but if you just fancy a quick ten minutes six months later you don’t have to do sit around and wait.

If it’s optimized for streaming off disc instaling to HD might not make a difference or even make things worse, like Halo 3.

Right. From now on, no-one can say that mandatory installs are necessary. It’s simply lazy/poor development.

Well done Sony.

Yes please Sony.
Give us to option to do so to increase load times at least.
Other than that, woohoo, for the non mandatory thing.

@5 If only game development was that black and white…

It’s nice to see some developers making an effort. Good job.

@Freek

PS3 installs and 360 installs are different though. The 360 ones are basically just disk images which conflicts with caching on the HDD in Halo’s case (which is a one off because developers aren’t actually supposed to use caching) but PS3 installs seem to work as a proper installed program like a PC game, so the game can selectively install content so it can load from both disc and HDD.

An optional install wouldn’t be a bad thing if it could help load times…but well done Sony (once again) for showing up third parties.

Though that is really their job ‘n all, being first party.

Is it really wise to show up third parties so much though? Sony first party games are all pretty excellent but as everyone keeps saying third parties aren’t doing so well… doesn’t this just support the idea that the PS3′s architecture was badly designed for the current market place?

“That’s despite news that the game will fill up to over 35Gb on a Blu-ray”

Despite? I’d say that filling up a Blu-ray is more an indication it wouldn’t need an install.

@Hunam

Sony has had to make awesome games though, as it had to shut up whining third parties, as well as gamers, who said the PS3 couldn’t handle or play great games, or had a weak graphics card, etc, etc.

Now no-one can do that, as you can’t look at Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, and now God Of War III and say the PS3 is a poor system…it would just look stupid.

That’s not to say third parties aren’t having problems with the PS3, a some probably still are; the difference is that those third parties can’t now say the PS3 is a flawed system, because Sony’s first party games prove completely the opposite.

Isn’t it still a flawed system if you have to put in a lot more effort to get the same out though?

They have proven the power is there and accessible, but it does come at a cost.

The troubles were really only at the begining of the Ps3s lifecycle and that was more to do with the devs having a year experience with the 360, getting used to the hardware then the Ps3.

All multiplatform games look identical now apart from the odd game Bayonetta for the Ps3 and Darksiders screen tearing are two recent examples.

If I remember rightly, Sony do offer their services to third parties to help them get to grips with developing for the system and to get all the intricacies of the architecture.
It’s up to the third parties to take the help and advice offered and use it.

It’s been proven it can be done, and it’s no secret that the graphical benchmarks for this console generation are on the PS3 (Obviously the PC would win that anyway, if we included all formats).

The issue with forced installs isn’t really the PS3 though, is it – it’s the damned Blu-Ray drive being too slow. Superb storage capacity, but at the cost of speed. Can you get faster ones now? Sony really should’ve built a better model into the slim.

On one hand I can see a method to their madness, making a unique console I mean. Maybe because I own all systems but I’m really getting lost in this multiplatform business, I mean if the PS3 was more like the 360 (off the shelf, PC style components) then what would be the point in having both console’s on the market?

I think I read somewhere that in the future they expect even more of a majority of multiplatform games, and in saying that I don’t quite see the point in both existing.

as i played GOW1 & 2 i never had any problem with load times… it was all straight to the action… same on GOW3 Demo. I really don’t think there will be many load times in gow3, maybe just for starting the game or loading a file. But i really believe the action will run smooth from begin to end with no loading screens.
