Speaking with the WSJ, Playfish president Kristian Segerstrale has said it’s working on a new social game based on a well known EA brand.

It’s the first time Playfish has mentioned projects since being taken over by EA last year.

Segerstrale also said social gaming will see growth within the next two years.

“Social gaming as an industry has grown pretty quickly, but it also means it has to grow up pretty quickly,” he said.

“I think we’re going to see it rapid maturing over the next 12 to 24 months.”

Well, after the crash of CitiesXL and Spore Islands (Facebook) which isn’t so great, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Sim City Social come soon…

I just can’t see the business model here as being successful. While monetisation of gifts etc… etc.. might bring in incremental revenue the amount of money Playfish has spent on media buying across Facebook means the company makes at a ridiculously small margin and returns are hard to predict.

Playfish were the biggest spender on Facebook ads in the world – the only guaranteed money-maker in this whole deal is Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft who take splits from ad spends on Facebook due to their percentage ownership.

Revenue and profit generation in these games is all about the top 3% of ‘premium’ users who’ll buy as much paid content as they can. They pay everyone else’s way in these games.

PolyGoneWithTheWind: I think you’re mixing up Playfish with Zynga, the latter spending massive amount of money on advertising indeed (they are the biggest spender for ads on Facebook).
