Rebellion’s original Aliens vs. Predator heading to Steam [Update]

AvP

Update: You can buy it now. It’s £2.99.

Rebellion to release the 1999 version of Aliens vs. Predator via Steam for cheap.

While pricing and a date are to be announced at a later date, the game will include the single-player mode at first, but a patch adding the multiplayer will be released later on.

“It’ll be very cheap – and it shows it’s age a little bit, but it is frightening and it is difficult,” Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley told IGN. “We will in due course fix up the multiplayer – and we’ll make sure it’s a free download.”

Currently, the game is to be made available only through the digital download service, but the possibility of it landing on Xbox Live Arcade or PSN is a possibility.

The next-gen version of Aliens vs. Predator will have a demo released for it, and the original game is expected to be released on Steam before the new one lands February 16.

There’s a lot to be excited about with the new AvP. Not only does it look great, but it has Lance Hendriksen in it.

I have the boxed edition somewhere but wouldn’t mind getting a more modern PC friendly version for cheap.

I loved this game, particularly the Colonial Marines portion. The lack of save states was really excellent for ramping up tension. Every encounter with an alien was frantic because they could kill you so easily which would put you back at the start of the level all over again. Plus the face huggers were scary bastards, they were so quick every time one jumped on my face it would scare the shit out of me.

I’ll definitely buy this to see how well it holds up, I just hope it isn’t broken like most Steam releases of old games. I think it’s about time Valve started testing and fixing games before dumping them on Steam, like GoG.com does.
