Molyneux names his top 5 revolutionary games
At last week’s BAFTA lecture in London, Peter Molyneux shared his top five revolutionary games ever released. So, what were the games? According to D’Toid, they were:
“Dune 2, Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Halo and World of Warcraft.”
Not a bad looking bunch, if we do say so ourselves. Molyneux confirmed at the same lecture last week that Fable III will support Natal.
Oh, and he showed Milo.

Everyone is going to say something different, but there is nothing in there which doesn’t have a good reason for being there. A couple are revolutionary not because they were the first to do something but revolutionary because of how they have done it (Halo, WoW).

He should have gone for Bungie’s Marathon over Halo, as it was that ganme that first introduced recharging energy shields instead of health packs and a motion-tracking radar.
I suppose it was the first FPS to introduce carrying only a limited arsenal of weapons, though, as well as lifelike enemy AI.

“Worst.
List.
Ever.”
The real time strategy game that essentially defined the template of the entire genre up to this very day.
A platform game commonly heralded and the shining example of effective 3D gaming in a time when 3D was still a new concept.
A huge, open adventure game of unsurpassed scale (for its time), and one of the strongly examples of character-stardom that didn’t involve a plumber or a hedgehog.
A first person shooter that laid down a plethora of genre innovations in just one game and people pay attention to consoles FPSs.
And the single most popular paid-for MMORPG of all time, which continues to grow over half a decade after its initial release, and stands as a testament to smart business and consumer interaction.
Yeah, what a fucking horrible list, right?
Frankly, it’s perfect. Though I would have put Elite in there myself. Five times.

Oh man, I *loved* the first Halo game for so many different reasons. The other two… meh, not so much.
