Epic opens new studio in Tokyo

During a panel at the Tokyo Game Show, Epic Games president Mike Capps announced that the Gears of War developer is staffing up for a studio in Tokyo.

The new team will primarily be responsible for lending its technological know-how to Japanese developers, who’ve traditionally had trouble with the Unreal Engine 3.

However, games aren’t completely out of the question for the exported studio.

“We are fanboys of Japanese gaming … We have deep respect for the long history of excellent Japanese games,” Capps said, using Shadow Complex’s Metroidvanian roots as an example.

There’s more over at Joystiq.

sigh , i think the less U3 engine in any games , western or japanese the better .

Yeah yeah yeah batman bioshock bla bla bla … but let’s face it , only a select few did something worthwile and fitting with the engine . The rest looking too similar in texture , colors , effects , or simply just badly done .

And as long as japanese devs wont try doing their own engines like Capcom and square , and keep getting the “easiest ones” to clone and ape western games … They’ll remain in the deep sh*t they currently are . Espacially jrpg devs hiding out on portables
