Lara man Gard leaves Crystal D
Lara co-creator Toby Gard has left Crystal Dynamics, according to his LinkedIn page.
No reason has been given for the move. The developer’s now doing general consultancy, providing “services covering story, cinematics, animation, character design, game design and balancing.”
Gard was on the original Tomb Raider team. He famously quit to work on Galleon, which kind of failed a bit. He came back into Eidos to work on the Tomb Raider franchise in 2004.
Never more. Via Gama and Develop. Thanks, Blerk.

Given that he was supposedly in charge of the Tomb Raider reboot after the Underworld guy was fired… where exactly does that leave the franchise now? Seems over for Lara.

He’s been gradually demoted since he first joined CD, they’ll have someone else for the re-boot…
Lara will never die as someone will always want to bleed some more dollars from the franchise.

oh, like he’s the only one capable of designing this game. I think this has something to do with Eidos and SE merger.
and fuck you, guys. Sakaguchi quit Squaresoft, yet that didn’t stop them from making an FF game (12) that was better than the last three ones he produced.

I think it’s a good thing for the franchise, frankly. Storywise, he brought nothing to the table on Underworld, other than the misconception that anyone was much interested in the confusing and uniteresting mish-mash of backstory stuff that had been bolted onto the series.
I said before that what TR needs is a new broom to sweep clean, and that wasn’t him.
