SCEE “looking into” changing the redesigned friend list on PS3

Thursday, 10th September 2009 21:48 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

SCEE has stated that its looking into to changing the redesigned Friends list that launched with PS3 firmware update 3.0.

“The updates to firmware don’t always suit everyone’s tastes, but on the flip side there are those that really like the changes – except maybe the friends list – which we are looking into based on your comments,” wrote SCEE’s brand manager Mark Bowles on the EU PS Blog.

“In fact we are looking at all your concerns raised in these pages and will keep you posted with developments as we always try to do. We really do appreciate the feedback you guys give us, both positive and negative.”

Sounds like a plan.

Hope they do more than just looking.

Yeah, I hope they do more than look into it. That friends list is ‘orrible.

I’m not usually one to criticise design choices (apples and oranges, and all that), but whoever was responsible for redesigning the friends most have been off his head.

They were fine the way they were.

Everything else in the update? Great!

There wasn’t much else, or did I miss something substantial?

They should just let the themes deal with stuff like that… they could have just made a few different versions of the XMB then.

Dynamic themes, which (for whatever criticism you may want to lay on them for having to pay for) look absolutely amazing in motion.

The “What’s New” tab, which gives you quick links to your most recently played games, big PS Store content, and external links to news on the internet regarding PS3 and PSP games.

The new bar on the top right of the screen, which displays your friends online, new messages in your inbox, news ticker, etc.

Generally speedier movements and transitions around the XMB.

    Larger font and buttons.

Honestly, there’s no reason they couldn’t have given people the option to customise them, or the option to remove the grey boxes all together.

What went wrong with the friends list, then?

@Michael: None of that is really substantial though. :)

They added a shade of grey behind the friends, which enlarges when selected. It is ugly and combined with the larger font size, does spoil the clean aesthetic of the XMB. I hope they do look into fixing it. Love the sparkles though :)

Those grey boxes are incredibly ugly, and I don’t like the new size of everything, either. Still, it’s speedier, which is good, but I’d trade the speed to get rid of the boxes and the size.
