Sony Aino phone will have Remote Play

aino2

Mein Gott. Sony just confirmed Sony Ericsson’s Aino phone will allow Remote Play. And it has an XMB. And, most likely, sparkles.

It’s out “early October,” and, according to SE lady Lisa Canning, “offers a unique multimedia experience for all PlayStation 3 fans as they can seamlessly access and control their PS3 media content anywhere, anytime using Remote Play.”

Canning added: “Remote Play with Aino lets you turn your PS3 on and off, browse and control the XMB and access the internet browser from anywhere in the world. Remote Play also lets you control and access the HD Drive’s media content on PS3 using the built-in WiFi or 3G connections via Aino.

“You can also access PlayStation Store via Remote Play or chat with friends via PlayStation Network. It is also possible to buy and download a new game from the Store via Aino so it is ready and waiting for you when you get home.”

Hit that link right now.

Edit: Of course you have. I just read that Kotick-piece…

  3. :D

Wolfenstein’s the best Nazi game ever made. I stand by that statement.

Call me crazy, but aren’t media and chat functionality already part of a modern phone? Why would you want to do that via a PS3 with remote play?

Media – because Phones tend not to have the capability to house 500Gb hard drives? I.e. Have a load of vids/music/pictures stored on your PS3 and be able to access them where ever you are using the awesome power of the internet.

Chat – I’m guessing is specifically with your PS3 friends list.

It’s really quite impressive functionality on a PSP.

Oh and Freek – you crazy! :)

I dunno, an Iphone has a pretty big hard drive these days, and syncs up really nicely with your media.

Ofcourse it’s impressive on PSP, it lets you play games on it, that makes sense.

It just seems a little over elaborate to have a PS3 on 24/7, and use an expensive mobile connection just access things that you could be doing natively on a modern phone.

And people who you don’t have their phone number don’t seem like the kind of people you would need to message where ever you are, immediately.

It runs the XMB on the PS3 and you view it on the phone. You don’t need the PS3 on fully, it can be woken up and turned off again via the phone. Remote play is also compatible with PlayTV (the digital TV add on which makes your PS3 a PVR). So whilst on holiday you can have the PS3 record your tv shows then watch them by accessing the PS3 remotely.

In terms of storage there is a pretty big difference between 32Gb and 500Gb.

If you want media on the go and Internet, that seems to do the trick. And lets face it, most people haven’t swapped out their standard PS3 harddisk for something bigger.

Do you really want access to all that on the go? How many people really need to see all their favorite TV shows even on holiday?

I’m just saying, it seems like a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. One of those things you show to friends and then never use.

  12. Freek, think about it from the perspective of someone who spends significant regular periods of time away from their main residence or has a lengthy daily commute and you’ll get it.

I think you are looking at things far too much from your own perspective Freek. Also of use is stuff like accessing the PSNStore. Something gets released whilst you are out or at work? Use you phone to turn on the PS3, kick off the download and turn off when done. It’s there when you get home.

But that’s just it, that person already has all that stuff in in his or her phone, right now. Or even a netbook that goes even further. Without the need to go through another device.

Sure you can do all that, but is it worth it? The kind of person that downloads stuff of PSN has a fast internet connection, so why the need to start it up while you are at work? It only takes 30 minutes or even less anyway.

It’s stuff that has a nice novelty value to it. When you have a PSP, nice bonus to have that, next to the main selling point: playing PS3 on the move.
But would you go out and buy a phone specifically for it? Without the gaming functionality bit of remote play? I very much doubt it.

People have a hell of a lot more media than can fit on a phone. You can faff and put what you think you’ll want on the phone whilst away, perhaps recoding it to work/fit on your phone, or you can have access to everything you own. Do many phones play all the formats the PS3 supports?

RE: Downloads. Yes people have fast internet connections, but if a big demo is released (both in size and anticipatedness) then waiting until you get home you will find that it’s not your zippy connection at home which is limiting the speed but the thousands of other people trying to get the thing at the same time.
