Rumor: Taiwanese manufacturers get PS3 Slim contract

Rumor has it that two Taiwanese manufacturing companies have been given contracts by Sony to start creating PS3 Slim.
According to UDN.com, one contract went to Foxconn and the other to Pegatron, both based in Taiwan.
More surprisingly, units are expected to start shipping in early July “to cope with expected summer vacation demands.”
Remember, rumor until proven otherwise, but keep in the back of your mind that both Foxconn and Pegatron manufactured the original PS3.
Thanks, Joystiq.

This summer vacation demand exist only in Australia and NZ, surely?
Who buys game consoles in summer? There are so many better things to do right now.

Personally I would rather go to a beach with nothing but Sangria for sustenance for a week than buy a gaming console.

Outside of cost reduction, I’m not sure the PS3 slim is all that needed is it? I don’t own a PS3, but isn’t a quality made unit? The 360 could use a new model, but I’m not sure of the benefits for the PS3.
I don’t many people that owned the smaller PS2 model. I prefered the look of the bigger one anyway.

Isn’t next month a little soon, considering they have said nothing about a slim line even existing?

@Freek, What’s wrong with announcing and releasing within days of each other? I personally like the syle of big announcements followed by “…you can go out and buy this tomorrow” (as Apple often do)

Swap the Sangria for Boddingtons and I’ll join you Steph
July seems pretty early to be shipping this…or perhaps Sony are running out of the fat PS3′s and need to hurry up with production.
If this is true though then it means that the PS3 Slim + Firmware 3.0 + Price Cut + Gran Turismo 5 relaunch won’t happen all at once….which is what Sony really should be aiming for IMO…

They’re definitely not releasing the Slim in July. The July date probably refers to when they’ll start rolling off the production line, before being stockpiled ready for launch later in the year.
I’d say an announcement at Gamescomm is looking increasingly likely though.
@Razor
The Firmware 3.0 rumours were pure unadulterated bollocks. Nothing in the history of updates to PSP and PS3 gives any indication that Sony places importance in version numbers.

Sure, make an anouncement and then release it right away is cool, but it doesn’t seem to happen in the videogame industrie. Especially not the revamp of a console. Has to have atleast 6 months of hype, and then release in time for the “holiday season”.

I think they will release it after GamesCon. Sounds reasonable imho… and much needed.

Original PS3 60GB launch model was made by ASUStek, not Foxconn and i dont get it, why it means “creating”.They just stamp the console.

The thing is, they’ll have to announce it and then release it almost immediately. As soon as they properly announce the slim, who’s going to want a fatty? I’d fully expect an announcement and a release within the same week.
Or, given that this is Sony, a planned announcement and release within the same week but the whole thing leaked accidentally by someone internal about three weeks earlier.
