Whoops: Broken Steel PC is broken [Update]

fallout33

Update: A Bethesda rep in the UK’s just told us that comment’s being chased now.

Update 2: The Beth devs are getting the same issue. Thanks, The Reticule.

Update 3: Bethesda’s issued a statement.

According to multiple reports, the PC version of Fallout 3 DLC Broken Steel isn’t working as it should.

The download throws up the error, “Not a cryptographic message or the cryptographic message is not formatted correctly. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8009200D)” upon installation.

There also appears to be a difference between the reported file-size (510Mb) and the file you actually click through to download (471.6Mb).

Check EG.

This isn’t so great. The Pitt was amazingly broken at launch. We’re after comment now.

Hmm… sounds like it’s the download itself that’s broken this time rather than the content.

Bathesda are comedy gold when it comes to these DLC updates. This is what, the third time they’ve released buggy/totally unusable DLC. I wouldn’t want to be head of QA at this point.

Looks like those Feral Ghoul QA staff weren’t such a good cost-cutting idea after all.

Not really a good performance. Two broken DLC releases implies some pretty poor QA procedures.

The base game has quite a few nasty bugs to.

I had a terrible one with Fawkes. He’d been following me around for ages and we were having a great time. Then I went across this raised walkway and into a building and for some reason he didn’t follow me. After a while I went back to see where he’d got to and there he was – hanging from the ceiling with his head stuck in the level geometry. And then he died. And there was nothing I could do about it. :-(

A suicidal super-mutant! Who’d have thought? :-D

I need to go back and play it at some point. I lasted about two hours after the opening section and turned it off.

Once, after leaving the bunker at Fort Bannister and clearing the whole place out of Talon Company mercs (collecting all their goodies, repairing armour and weapons etc etc) when I went through the door back to the capital wasteland, the right stick wouldn’t respond. I could walk around but couldn’t turn or look up or down.

As the game had auto saved I had to go back at least three or so hours to my last manual save, where the right stick magically worked again! Thought it was my pad at first but it was fine with other games. Also got stuck on the scenery a few times and had to reload the Waters Of Life quest because they refused to open the door. Yet despite these it was the most enjoyable adventure game I’ve played in years. Rough diamonds are often the most rewarding!

It’s been removed from the marketplace on the PC now. At least it shows they’re looking at it I suppose.

I’ve logged 240 hours on Fallout 3 and will play again once all the DLC is out and non-buggy. It is one of the best games I’ve ever played. I used to live in DC for five years so perhaps the game affects me differently than most, I don’t know. Anyway, I’m really surprised that Bethesda has had these problems. I generally trust anything they come out with…. =/

“PC sucks… again”
The Pitt was only massively bugged on Xbox 360. The PC release was fine, then.
