Head of Games for Windows Live sacked

gamesforwindowslive1b.jpg

As part of Microsoft’s restructuring plan to eventually shed five thousand jobs, the highest profile employee to get the chop is Chris Early, general manager of Games for Windows Live.

Venture Beat has contacted Early for comment but only receives an auto-response from his email saying his time as Microsoft has “come to a close.”

This decision obviously raises questions how how much longer the Redwood giant will continue to invest in the Games for Windows Live service.

More through the link.

Seems over for GfWL. No doubt they’ve decided to buy Valve instead.

I doubt it’s over, it’s actually picking up pace now and finally it’s something not to fear on a box cover. It is a bit strange going to Steam to get a beta for a GFWL title though!

If they sell it as just a set of guarantees about supporting controllers, Live friend lists and all that, then it’d be fine. If the interface didn’t suck arse, as I’ve been told it does :)

Support which it clearly needs, I have to say GfWLive is as retro you can get for an RTS matchmaking service.

The revamp is a big improvement and at least it doesn’t seem to get stuck doing stuff unlike its Xbox counterpart these days.

Without a standalone, systray app though it’s not going to be a threat to Steam Community or Xfire and will remain rather superfluous. I can send messages and check my friends list through Xbox.com but not directly on my PC unless I’m in a GFWL title, that’s bloody stupid.
