Rare pitched Avatars for Xbox 360 launch

Rare has said the Xbox 360 avatars were a feature originally intended to launch long ago.

“The concept of avatars is something that we came up with about four years ago now,” Mark Betteridge, studio boss, told

“We were thinking about how hardcore and spiky the previous Xbox was, and everybody was of a view that the new one was going to be more smooth and friendly. Everybody was in agreement that was the right thing.

“So we pitched avatars as something out of the box with an interface where you build a character that looks like yourself, or whoever you want it to look like, and can play mini-games and things like that – but it represents you on the Live system, that’s all it was based around,” he added.

Plenty more through there.

What a failed attempt at trying to detract from the fact that they’re ripoffs of Mii’s.

Microsoft Bloke #1: I thought of avatars.
    ” #2: No, I did.
    ” #3: I gave them the idea.
    ” #2: They told me I did!
    ” #4: You’re all wrong, I was the one!
” #1: You’re liars, the lot of you.
    ” #4: Pfft, I have proof. I made the first 3D people!

It’s a bloody shambles Microsoft, I hope you’re pleased with yourself. And you’re really not fooling anyone anymore, not after this cock-up. Well, amazingly stupid and unobservant people maybe, and that does count for a lot of people… okay, you might be fooling some people but…

    You’re not fooling me!

Must I? I really didn’t want to go back through the archives and put names to all those, so here’s hoping the point came across despite my obvious laziness. :p
