“General opinion” says FIFA can’t match PES gameplay, says Konami’s Murphy

Football War Day entered a new phase this afternoon, as Konami’s John Murphy laid into FIFA, saying concensus suggests PES is, in a nutshell, better.

“It is all very well for EA to say that FIFA is making great strides, but general opinion suggests that they still have a long way to go before they can match the intuitive and absorbing gameplay of Pro Evolution Soccer,” Murphy told MCV.

“That is not to say that we are resting on our laurels, though. PES 2009 has a vast number of new additions that elevate it far beyond anything anyone else is doing.”

Balls, eh? More through the link. Thanks, Kotaku.

Yeah… that’s not a clever thing to say. You might as well say:

“People have been playing Pro Evo for so long that it’s what they’re used to now and nothing else feels quite the same”

It’s like listening to fanboys say your game is great when the average player just isn’t enthused any more.

Oh dear this could get nasty. Having played FIFA 09 though I think Konami is going to have to do something quite stunning to beat it. And I’m not sure it can.

PES 2008 was a disaster for Konami, and alienated a great deal of the core PES userbase – particularly with the terrible online play. FIFA 2008 was the better game, and the Captain Your Country mode in Euro 2008 was staggeringly good.

PES 2009 has to be phenomenally good as FIFA 2009 looks better yet.

Yep, just echoing what’s been said here. PES 2008 was a disaster, and for me, last year’s FIFA beat it.

Playing the demo of FIFA 09, and it’s huge strides ahead of last year’s already-impressive effort. PES will really have to pull the stops out to beat FIFA this year.
