MGS4 glory gone for PS3 in Japan, PSP soars

Friday, 25th July 2008 07:01 GMT By Patrick Garratt

PSP’s firmly in charge of the Japanese hardware charts this week, and any bump felt by PS3 from MGS4 is seemingly over, with the machine back down to around 10,000 per week. Last week’s charts here. Data for the week ending July 20. Thanks, Media Create.

  • PSP – 74,024
  • DS – 54,531
  • Wii – 40,803
  • PS3 – 11,253
  • PS2 – 9,535
  • Xbox 360 – 4,208

The new Dragon Quest game hit the shelves in Japan on DS the other day. Will be interesting to see how it affects DS hardware sales.

I can’t imagine there are all that many people WITHOUT a DS right now. And that anyone with an interest in Dragon Quest would already own a DS as there’s a handful of DQ-related games already on the platform.

Having said that, it’s the DS. Anything could happen.

Sony seem to be moving a lot of hardware what with three products still being sold and all. Perhaps they’re more switched on than the internet suggests :P

These figures include the first week of Dragon Quest V sales, Shatner. The game did about 700,000 copies in week one, but hardware sales don’t really seem to have been affected much.

Incidentally, I think there was also a new colour PSP out this week. Although I can’t remember which colour. There are so many of them over there.

I can’t see anything short of a major price cut doing anything for the DS now. There are 23 million of them sold there already after all.
