MGS4 rush pushes PS3 sales to 80,000 in Japan in past week
According to IGN, Famitsu’s reporting that MGS4 came close to hitting 500,000 sales in Japan in its first week of release, making it the fastest selling Japanese PS3 game and providing a huge boost to PS3 sales in the country.
Enterbrain figures show that 77,208 PS3s were sold in Japan in the week ending June 15. Japanese gamers bought 476,334 copies of MGS4 in the same week.
As you can see from last week’s hardware figures, the news will give Sony plenty to smile about.

I predicted 75k PS3s so I’m fairly pleased with that.
40k next week I reckon.

Bloody norah!
I said 100,000 so I went a bit too far. I wonder how long it’ll take ‘em to drop back to 10k a week?
And what’s the next big-hitting PS3 title in Japan?

Answering my own question, it’s probably “Siren” next month.
Edit: And possibly Soul Calibur 4, but I’ve no idea if the Japanese actually like that or not.

Siren won’t have anything like that sort of impact though, surely?

No, it wont. I don’t think there’s another big hitter for a long while now.

No, Siren won’t be a system-seller. But it’s probably their best chance for a good charter in the near future. The Japanese PS3 release list is woefully pallid. No wonder they’re not buying the fucking thing – half of the stuff on there is Western tat that even I wouldn’t buy.
Back to MGS, VGChartz (yes, yes) has stories on their front page claiming 1.3 million sold on day one, PS3 sales up 180% in the US and cumulative PS3 sales in Europe now properly past 360 sales. Would be nice to find out if any of that stuff’s actually true, Pat.

I only went there to see how Siren sells in Japan. Honest!
Siren 2 did 80,000 copies in total, btw. I might’ve jumped the gun on the ‘next best hope for a good charter’ thing.

I like the way we still all pretend that Japanese sales matter.

But yeah… I doubt Sony are going to announce they’ve outsold the 360 in Europe twice. It would make them look a little stupid.

I’d say an 800% increase is a bit of a shock, personally
Shows what exclusives do, really. Wait till they drop the price. We’ll have to build bunkers.

Price really isn’t an issue in Japan Pat. Frankly if they hadn’t managed over 60k hardware sales this week in Japan then they might as well have stuck a fork in the machine.

So whats next? Hmmm, I’d have to say LBP and Resistance.
Is GT5 Q4 this year or next year?

Newbie: GT5 will be next year some time. Wont be Q4 next year though (In Japan at least). Resistance wont have an effect in Japan… LBP might.

Pat: 800%?! See now that’s a number I can get excited about. Wow, that’s a pretty big boost.
Still, all contextual though isn’t it?

Nah, I know Resistance wont have much of an effect at all, just listing some games I’m looking forward too.
LBP may, it doesnt look ‘western’ so it may do OK.

My point is, given all the new 360 JRPGs – which let’s face it, is the biggest/best Japanese export in regards to gaming – and considering how crap the 360 is doing over there – then surely sales figures in terms of how they effect the Western gaming library have lost their importance this generation? Which in turn can only be a good thing as now our selection of games isn’t decided by a nation of people who ‘on the whole’ have a completely different gaming palette than we do.

Theres a simple way that MS could win Japan.
Buy either Nintendo or Square.
Buy both and they have it sown up

Don’t Sony still own some of Square?
Oh and part of their problem in Japan is that they are American. Buying stuff up won’t necessarily help.

Sony own about 9% of Square Enix, iirc.

They did yes (18%) – not sure if they ever sold it on,or how it translates after the Enix merger … http://uk.ps2.ign.com/articles/098/098911p1.html

I reckon that had those 360 RPGs been exclusive to PS3, the sales would have been massive, and every release would have given the PS3 a big boost.

Most likely, yeah. But still, the point being is that we’ll still get them. So Japanese console sales lose some of their importance with regard to how they affect the Western games market.
