GDC: Giant update to Home beta next week, says Sony
According to this, Sony’s going to make a major update to the Home beta next week, including changes to the UI, the graphics engine, the addition of the Marketplace building, the first look at game-launching and a resolution bump (back) up to 1080p.
There’s absolutely loads of stuff through that link. There’s no set release date for the online PS3 service yet, but it sounds like it can’t be that far off. Definitely take a look.

Can anyone explain to me what the point of Home is? Looks to me like a complicated to communicat with other users and a potentially big money making machine for Sony (virtual clothes, furniture and what not)

I get it, I just don’t really want it. I can see how it’s going to be cool in that it could be Live+++. I could be one of those things I don’t really need until I’ve got it, if you see what I mean.

I see what you mean and I will probably use it as well once it’s there, but right now it really seems absolutly pointless to me.

I guess they’re banking on the social thing working. I suppose there are an awful lot of people that play The Sims out there, and I don’t really understand that either.

They could achieve Live+++ simply by tweaking some of the aspects that are currently not that great. I don’t really know what makes Live good since I never used or even seen it in action.
All I really want is ingame messaging. That said, if I hadn’t bought Burnout recently I probably would have said that I didn’t need that either…

The only time I really used all the Live stop properly was with Gears of War. Voice chat, multiplay, etc. That was the only time it really felt as though it was working properly. I think it’s been a bit non-essential for me after that.

I really like the idea of it. I love virtual worlds where I can get virtual TV’s and such, but it’ll be an acquired taste. I wouldn’t pay for it, but I’m looking forward to having a go at it. It’s free, remember that.

Yep, free is great. No reason not to try it at all.

I fully expect Sony to use Home as a sub-platform in itself to cross promote other products.
Want to see the new (Sony Pictures owned) trailer for the new James Bond movie? It’s exclusive on Home.
Whilst you’re there, go check out Jaguar’s showroom showcasing their 2008 models in partnership with polyphony digital.
Stuff like that. I think there’s huge commercial potential with Home that goes beyond what we’re currently being led to expect right now. Just imagine if lots of Blu Ray movies come with things for your PSN Home?
Whether they can actually pull it off remains to be seen.

Yeah, Shatner, those are all things that could realistically happen.
Would be PR heaven for Sony if they actually pull it off.
Everyone dressed up like James Bond and Bond babes for the
new James Bond movie release, lol.
